Subject: Bands reunited

Written By: eightiesfan on 01/16/04 at 09:28 a.m.

This next week VH1 is debuting a series called "Bands Reunited" - which band would you like them to try and bring back together?

One of my personal picks would be Crowded House or Split Enz.  I also think it would be great if they could reunite some estranged members with their former bands (ie, Steve Perry with Journey or Dennis de Young with Styx)

Well since Duran Duran already has reunited. I would like to see Poison, Culture Club and Prince and the Revolution.

Getting the Police or the Smiths back together would be something!

Split Enz would be cool!  One Step Ahaead is one of my favorite songs of the era.

The Police would be awsome to see get back together. Also The Split Enz. I saw them in concert back in 1981. It was the "True Colors" tour. It was the first concert I ever went to. Neil Finn is just great. His work with both Split Enz & Crowed House is just awsome.

The Police and The Smiths would be most excellent for a reunion.  Especially The Smiths, but that's about as likely as a Beatles reunion at this point.  Where has Morrissey been keeping himself these days?  I heard the latest Johnny Marr CD.  It stinks!

Oh, yeah, I LOVE "One Step Ahead."  I remember the video on MTV.  I just burned my copy of "Waiata" (aka "Corroboree") onto CD-R.  "Waiata" didn't get the critical acclaim of "Mental Notes" or "True Colours," but it has a lot of sentimental value to me, as does "Conflicting Emotions."

When is A Flock of Seagulls gonna be on VH1?

The Police did reunite for their Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame Induction in 2003 playing Every Breath You Take, Message in a Bottle and Roxanne. They were awesome. They still get along and are friendly but it changes when they get on stage. They become competitive and jealous.

I would LOVE to see The Smiths reunite, but I've heard conflicting stories of whether Morrissey and Johnny Marr are even on speaking terms! I wouldn't imagine that Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke would be since they sued him and Johnny for royalties, and I don't think Moz has paid them.

Morrissey will FINALLY be making a comeback this April with his new album, You Are The Quarry. I can't wait!! As long as it's not another Southpaw Grammar or Maladjusted, I'll be happy. But it's not supposed to be. I don't think I've heard any Johnny Marr + the Healers. Electronic (his previous project) wasn't bad, though, was it?

Absolutely Vile

Did the court order Moz to pay up?, or is the case in some drawn out appeals process?
I hope the new Morrissey will be another "Viva Hate" or "Your Arsenal"! :D  I agree, "Maladjusted" and "Vauxhall and I" were completely lackluster. "Southpaw Grammar" was a bit better because he was experimenting with longer song structures, but the material was not very remarkable.  "World of Morrissey" and "My Early Burglary Years" had some great songs, though.
The problem with Johnny Marr + The Healers is that it's dull-average rock.  What happened to the gift for great guitar licks he exhibited on the The Smiths songs?  Maybe he spent all his creativity before he was 30.  Happens a lot in pop music.
Electronic was Johnny Marr and Bernard Sumner.  I think Neil Tennant was involved at some point.  I found the music pleasant but forgettable.

A Kajagoogoo reunion would be a big success, but I think the lads are still arguing over petty grievances.  I read some letter Limahl wrote to his local newspaper, commenting on some of the issues.  I believe it's on one of the Kajagoogoo pages.

I was just thinking, Kajagoogoo were as popular as Duran Duran for about half of 1983!  To this day the big K, with their one hit, is more familiar to Americans than other bands of the same time who had many more hits in the UK and elsewhere, such as Ultravox, OMD, or Aztec Camera.  Who could forget such a zany name and Limahl's crazy hair-do?  "Too Shy" was an awesome song.  It deserved to rise higher in the charts than #5, but in the summer of '83, nobody could compete with The Police, Michael Jackson, and the theme from "Flashdance"!
Anyway, "Turn Your Back On Me" should have gone Top 40 here, but it didn't.  Limahl's "Neverending Story" did quite well a couple of years later. :D

Steve Perry also has some kind of chronic illness, it's not MS, but something like it.
Men At Work could make a fast clean up with a reunion tour.  One of their members lives in the States and is in a weird religious cult.  He was in the news five or six years ago, for what I can't remember.
A-Ha would still draw big crowds in Europe and Latin America.  They were big, but not nearly as big, in the U.S.
Trio?  They could go on tour with Right Said Fred.

Here is the schedule for VH1's "Bands Reunited" episodes for anyone who's interested:
Mon Jan 19 - Berlin
Tues Jan 20 - Romeo Void
Wed Jan 21 - A Flock of Seagulls
Thurs Jan 22 - Klymaxx
Fri Jan 23 - Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Mon Jan 26 - Kajagoogoo
Tues Jan 27 - Extreme
Wed Jan 28 - Dramarama
Thurs Jan 29 - The Alarm
Fri Jan 30 - Squeeze
I think it's neat the way they show the whole process of actually tracking down the group members and trying to talk them into doing the reunion as well as the actual performances themselves.

imho, I just can't enjoy groups reuniting. Sorry to rain on your parades, and yes, I'm a nut, but I liked the groups when they were originally happening.  Seeing them again years later just isn't the same for me, even if they sound decent. For eg. the Eagles did a concert about a year ago and though they were old fogies, sounded smooth and flawless....boring.

What I wish for are crystal clear redigitized music and videos from every group imaginable for my tv.  Just leave the tv on in place of a stereo and have the groups doing their songs at the real time they originally did them.  that would be great for parties on 50 inch big screens.  When the artists were young, they were just more raw and powerful and better looking.  I remember a quote from John Lennon when asked if the Beatles would ever get back together again.  He said, "Who'ed want to see a bunch of 50 year old croaking Beatles?"

Actually what I meant was that it would be nice to see them with the original guitarist, Gary Richrath (I probably spelled that wrong) back in the lineup, if it hasn't happened already. He got kicked out of the band about fifteen years ago due to substance abuse problems and clashing egos with frontman Kevin Cronin.  Otherwise you're right that they're still out there playing and though I haven't had a chance to see them in concert, I'm sure they sound better than ever.

Which original lineup? With Vince Clarke back or Alan Wilder? Alan seems to have made it perfectly clear that he wants nothing more to do with Depeche Mode (he refused to do commentary on the 101 DVD) and is quite happy working on his own little project, Recoil. I think he prefers to be more behind the scenes. Vince will never return, I doubt. Erasure are still together, and Andy Bell might throw a hissy fit. ;)

As with Depeche Mode, Vince Clarke won't return to Yaz/Yazoo, because Erasure are still together, and Alison Moyet still has a solo career. Andy Bell might also get jealous. ;)

Alison Moyet has (present tense) a solo career?  I haven't heard anything from her in a stretch!  I liked some of her solo songs a lot, but not as much as Yazoo.  I prefer Yazoo.  They changed the name to avoid conflict in America.  There was another group using the name at the time.  They took the name from the legendary and most excellent roots blues label "Yazoo Records," which was named after the Yazoo River in Mississippi, where there is alos Yazoo City.
My favorite Erasure record is still "Wonderland," because it's the most Yazoo-like.  As their career prgressed, Andy Bell's persona overtook all the music.  They found their niche market and milked it for all they could.  Still, I liked "The Circus" almost as much as "Wonderland."  The other two Erasure albums I really liked were "I Say I Say I Say" (produced by Martyn Ware!), and the self-titled album, featuring the wonderful ballad, "Rock Me Gently."

The Everly Brothers hit "Wake Up Little Suzie"* was banned in Boston in 1957.  In an egregious case of censorship, the Boston bluenoses objected to the implications of an unwed teenage couple spending the night together.  The lyrics about a panicked teenage couple who innocently fell asleep at the drive-in, and woke up to find themselves without an alibi.  To wit, "What are gonna tell your mama, what are we gonna tell your pa, what are we gonna tell our friends when they say 'ooh la la!'"  That's why I found it ironic that Don Everly's daughter  married the lascivious Axl Rose.

Saw Kajagoogoo reunited, couldn't even listen to them, was too busy studying Amal as if he were a lab rat. No offence to anyone who likes them, but imo, a little makeover work for Amal would have gone a long way.

I thought the lead singer, Nick Beggs, looked hot though. In fact he looks better now than he did in the 80's.

Tears For Fears have reunited.

Check www.arista.com and look for their new song "Closest Thing To Heaven". Their new album "Everyone Loves A Happy Ending" is coming out in April.

The new song sounds like a mix of "Mother's Talk" and "Sowing The Seeds Of Love". Don't get me wrong though, it's great.

I would love to see a tour with TFF and Duran Duran. I could then die in peace.

@Absolutely Vile:   Yep, you're right.  Alan Wilder refused to participate in the interviewing process of the 101 DVD (2003).  Which honestly, I thought was strange...especially since he participated in the Singles 86/98 DVD interviews.  Vince...yeah Andy Bell might hit him with a frying pan if he ever thought about reuniting with Depeche Mode.  So that's out of the question!  LOL

But the Singles 86>98 DVD was released a few years ago. Plenty of time for Alan to change his mind about whether he wants anything more to do with Depeche Mode or not. Personally I think it's rather selfish to completely discredit 13 years of your career (not to mention the high point of it). Alan should embrace his time with Depeche Mode, not forget about it! I mean, I can understand wanting to move on, but seriously...without Depeche Mode, where would he be?

I'd love for The Time to reunite, but I wonder if Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis would consider that beneath them now, as they are successful producers.

I'd also like to see the Commodores (w/Lionel Ritchie) and DeBarge.

*written by Bedleux & Felix Bryant, also covered by Simon & Garfunkel.

:o :oThe funny thing is that it was felice bryant who was responsible for the final version of "Wake up little suzie".Boudleaux wanted the song to have more amorous content, but his wife objected.I'd like to see his version of the song,as he wanted to write it ;) ;)Cheers!

I'd like to see VH1 feature The Vapors in a "Bands Reunited" episode if they do any more of these; it might be kind of neat to see them perform "Turning Japanese" again. :)

I know I've mentioned this before but I can't wait to see the Squeeze episode that airs tonight.

Here is the schedule for VH1's "Bands Reunited" episodes for anyone who's interested:
Mon Jan 19 - Berlin
Tues Jan 20 - Romeo Void
Wed Jan 21 - A Flock of Seagulls
Thurs Jan 22 - Klymaxx
Fri Jan 23 - Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Mon Jan 26 - Kajagoogoo
Tues Jan 27 - Extreme
Wed Jan 28 - Dramarama
Thurs Jan 29 - The Alarm
Fri Jan 30 - Squeeze
I think it's neat the way they show the whole process of actually tracking down the group members and trying to talk them into doing the reunion as well as the actual performances themselves.

They reunited Squeeze.

Whoa... that was one cool group.  Many great tunes, although Tempted was their main big hit.

I missed the January 30th showing.  Gotta catch the rerun!

Just saw the show last night, NO they didn't reunite Squeeze!
All the members agreed (somewhat reluctantly) and then when it came time, they all bailed, one by one.
Obviously they have a lot of bad blood still flowing..
I was really pi**ed off that VH1 spent a half hour, getting us all pumped up for them getting together, and then just after the third commercial break, they downplay the whole thing and that it wasn't going to happen. >:(

I'd like to see one of the "grandaddies" of new wave bands come back together: The Talking Heads!

They were so great together! And they are so lousy apart!

I'd also love a Smiths reunion.

They briefly reunited for the "Rock & Roll Hall of Fame" ceremony, which they were inducted, about two years ago. They were great.  :D
