Subject: Shoes that looked like boxing sneakers???

Written By: Zed_Omega on 01/29/04 at 12:15 a.m.

OK (I think) this is an interesting one...

In the late 80's, I had a pair of soft leather shoes that looked like boxing sneakers except they didn't go up the leg as high. They went up just above the ankle and that top part at the ankle was cut at an angle with the front about 1 inch higher than the back. They were all black with thin soft rubber black soles, and they also came in all white. Not sure if they came in any other colors.

Does that sound familiar to anyone???

Sounds famliar, but I can't remember what they were called. I think they became popular with first hip hop videos.

They were kind of a "New Wave" fashion style shoe. Very slick, tight, smooth design. No lines, patterns or logo's on them.

I can also very definitely remember that they weren't a sneaker brand.

Thanks for the post rubixgirl!
I'm absolutely sure that they weren't worn by any hip-hoppers (?). I can disticntly remember the one's they wore were a sneaker style.

Maybe they were a regional thing. I got them when I lived in Utah in 1987 and didn't see them on TV or video's or even see anyone wearing them when I moved back home to New York.

In the Terminator, Michael Bienne put on these black Nike high top sneakers with a big silver Nike slash and velcro strap.  Those were the most excellent shoes in the mid 80s, American made, lightweight durable canvas material, supportive of the ankle, new wave-ish, and gone forever. saw another pair of solid black hi-top dressy sneakers in a mod clothes shop in about 1985 (maybe the ones in this thread).  wish I'd have bought them, because I never have seen any more like 'em.

Yep, they made up for the urine-stained pants Reese stole from the bum.

I remember back in the 80s my wife wore wrestling boots (like amatuer wrestlers wore, not professional ones).  That was a trend that lasted a couple years.  Nike , Adidas, and Asics were the most popular ones.  Don't know if that helps or not...

Y'all are bringing back so many memories, I remember the wrestling boots, saw several ladies wearing them, usually in dark or black attire, mod dews.  Reese in the Terminator, yuk if those bum pants were nasty, however, if clean, they looked cool with his outfit, kind of paint stained, kind of a dress style light weight sweat pant, ripped tee shirt, trench coat (like the Aussie type), black Nike hi-tops, really casual, comfortable, cool, and functionable attire.

Yeah I can remember those sneaker styles as well. I even found some pictures online but nothing really close to what I had.

Oh well, these shoes I had must have been from a small regional company or something. The best I can come up with is they looked something along the lines of a Capezio dance shoe, just not that brand, and again looking more like boxing sneakers in that they laced up from way down at the toe!

Thanks though!

Was it like the sneakers Lisa (Kelly LeBrock) wore in the final scene in Weird Science.

Arnold's attire in T1 was cool too, black spiked cycle jacket, trousers, and black leather cycle boots.  If you find out where to get the subject sneakers, please advise! BJ26 is history for this Friday, hasta luego, weekend, here I come :)

Nope - the one's I had weren't sneakers, they just shoes that looked like boxing sneakers. Kind of like a high ankled dance shoe.

Thanks though!

No. Madonna wore totally different shoes from the ones Zed described.

Take a look at this Spandau Ballet cover and see if you can spot the shoes Zed is talking about:

They were indeed made to look like boxing sneakers. You might as well go to a sporting goods store and buy some Everlast ones if you wanna bring back that New Wave style :)

Glad I could help. I wish I still had my pair. They would come in real handy when I dress 80's for my 80's tribute band I have. If you find them anywhere let me know where. Good luck.
