Subject: Weird Al Parodies

Written By: eightiesfan on 01/30/04 at 06:20 a.m.

My favorite Weird Al songs are his two Michael Jackon parodies, "Eat It" and "Fat" and his early 90's parody of Nirvana, "Smells Like Nirvana"; the songs by themselves are hysterical and are even funnier when you see the music videos.

A little FYI: one of my favorite stories about Weird Al is about when he was in college working as a DJ and one of the things he used to do on the air was put on the Debby Boone record "You Light Up My Life" and then scratch it with the needle. I think he must've wrecked a lot of 45's doing that!

I like his Like A Surgeon and Eat It...as well as I Lost on Jeopardy.  ;D

Not to mention turntable needles.  I'm sure his station manager was very pleased! >:(
I remember Weird Al when he was simply "Weird Al" on the Dr. Demento show.  Some of my favorite early Als were
"I Love Rocky Road" (Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n' Roll"), "Another One Rides the Bus" (Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust"), and, of course, "My Balogna" (The Knack's "My Sharona"), which was recorded in his college dorm bathroom! ;D

Weird Al was one of the first cassette tapes I ever owned!  I was only 10 when it came out so "like a surgeon" kinda scared me..because of the video of him walking around a hospital and all.
But I loved Dare to be stupid, George of the jungle, Cable T.V, Slime creatures from outer space... ;D

I hope he didn't slow down b/c of the incident when he did Omish Paradise. (w/ Coolio having a big hissy fit and no sense of humor)  ::)

He put out a cd about five years ago called "Running with Scissors". One of the songs was a parody of Don Mclean's hit "American Pie" called the "The Saga Continues" - sort of a tribute to the latest Star Wars movie that was coming out at the time.

Regarding "Amish Paradise," Coolio was all indignant, saying "Yo, I'm not down wid dat!"  As though it was HIS song.  He ripped "Gangsta's Paradise" right from Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise."  Like a lot of immature people, Coolio has (as you say) no sense of humor and takes himself way too seriously.  Weird Al's reaction was great.  He didn't point the finger back at Coolio, he just shrugged, grinned, and said "I'm sorry." ;)

Yeah, I thought he handled it well. Coolio's so stupid.  ::)
I'm glad to hear he's still been at it.

Oh yeah, I forgot "I Lost on Jeopardy," that was a great video, too.  Greg Kihn had a cameo in it.  That's the funny thing, guys like Kihn and Doug Feiger (The Knack) loved the spoofs on their songs.  Most artists would be flattered to have a song well known enough to parody.  In the '80s, an interviewer asked Weird Al if anyone refused to let him do a parody, Weird Al said, "Oh, just people who wear lots of purple and have no sense of humor."  Clue: he wasn't talking about Barney.

The movie UHF was wicked funny!  That's the first place I saw Michael Richards, later known as Kramer, as the janitor.  There's a scene in which Weird Al does a Sam Kinnison imitation.  Blink and you would miss it, but he's on his ex's answering machine going "Ohh, ohh, I'm in hell!!" :D

That's what Weird Al quoted Dave Grohl as saying during his interview on Behind the Music a few years ago. One of the things I loved about the "Smells Like Nirvana" video was when Dick Van Patten made a cameo sitting in the bleachers. :D :)

Actually, he is still doing parodies.  His latest CD is called POODLE HAT and has some good stuff on it.  It's nominated for a Grammy.  The song "Couch Potato" is probably the highlight of the CD.  He parodies Eminem on his song "Lose Yourself."

My favorite Weird Al Yankovic songs are...
My Bologna
Another One Rides The Bus
Amish Paradise
Smells Like Nirvana
Couch Potato

I hope Eminem had a better sense of humor about it than Coolio did.

I think my favorite is "The White Stuff", a take on The New Kids On The Block, "The Right Stuff", that's about the filling in an Oreo.  I also like the polka medley that's on the album that the above mentioned song is on.  "Amish Paradise" is also one of my favorites.  I love the video.

I wonder when he is going to do a hilarious parody of the current pop princesses Britney/Christina/Jessica?   THAT Id like to see!

I personally think that a performer hasnt truly hit the big time in pop culture unless Weird Al has done a parody of their song.  Coolio and Eminem should feel honored instead of pissed off at Weird Al.
