Subject: The Brat Pack

Written By: Riely Manderson on 02/05/04 at 02:22 p.m.

If you ask someone quick name the biggest thing of the 80s 99.8 will most likely say the brat pack Rob Lowe, Molly Ringwald,Emilllio Estevez, Alley Sheedy, Andrew Mcarthy, Judd Nelson, Demi Moore. I was 18 when their movies came out so I could relate young adult with major issues bottom line. The breakfast club St. Elmos fires werent movies to me (this sounds dumb I know) they were real. I mean it was my life on cinema. Anyone else a huge brat pack fan or just hates em??

Big Brat Pack fan.  It's funny because they were all touted as the future of Hollywood, but they never really made that big of a splash, except for maybe Demi Moore and probably Keifer Sutherland.  They were all exceptionally talented except for maybe Andrew McCarthy who basically played the same part in every movie he was in.  Why did his eyes always get big when he was serious?  The world may never know!   :-/

Not an actual "brat packer," but Anthony Michael Hall was probably the best pure actor in the bunch.  Does anyone watch The Dead Zone?

The Brat Pack started out as just being the cast from St. Elmos Fire, but then grew to included other John Hughes-esque type movie actors (Anthony Michael Hall, Molly Ringwald, etc).
I loved all those movies. The characters, to me, were very relateable. The movies didn't talk down to me as a teen which is what you want, especially at that age.
As for Andrew McCarthy's eyes  :o I just thought I was the only one that noticed it. Especially in Pretty in Pink, when Andie (Molly Ringwald) is confronting him about not calling her. The observation is hilarious... ;D
I also think some of the brat pack had to take a hiatus to come back stronger (i.e. Anthony Michael Hall in Dead Zone, Keifer Sutherland in 24 and John Cryer in Two and Half Men)

You forgot Mare Winningham who while a member of the brat pack looked like she was 40 years old.

Most of the brat packers were long on publicity and short on talent.  I liked Molly, Anthony, Emilio, and Judd. 8)

Andrew Mc Carthy.  Hilarious!  Everytime I watched his movies (Pretty In Pink, St. Elmo's Fire, Fresh Horses, etc.) with friends, the rest of the night we would talk to each other and someone would do that stupid "eye thing."  That was probably his thing too.  The directors would say, "OK Andrew - now do the eye thing!"  LOLOLOL!!!!!!  What a clod!   ;D ;D ;D

Maxwell, I agree.  I would say the ones you mentioned were definitely the talents of the bunch.  The whole Brat Pack brings back a bit of nostalgia, though.  Kind of like some 80s songs that I listened to back then and I hear them now and think "Why did I ever like that?"

Songs like "Come On Eileen" and "Pass The Dutchie" I would never listen to if they were released today.  But they take me back to times that I remember fondly...

Weeeelll, stringr, I gotta tell ya, I wish there were songs as interesting as "Come On Eileen" and "Pass the Dutchie" on the charts today.  I know what you mean, though,  I have my
"I Can't Believe I Used to Like These Guys File."  I'll refrain from examples 'coz I don't want to dump on certain artists I know others on this board totally LUV!

My favorite Andrew McCarthy movie is "Weekend at Bernie's; it was hilarious the way nobody knew Bernie was dead except for those two guys.

I wonder what's going on with Emilio Estevez these days; haven't really heard anything about him since The Mighty Ducks films and his short marriage to Paula Abdul. It seems his dad and his brother Charlie Sheen are in the news more now.

Speaking of Andrew McCarthy, anyone notice how adorable he is when he smiles?

On a slightly different note, which of the brat pack kids was the real life heroin addict? I was hearing something about this the other day, but the name was never mentionned. Could it be Anthony Michael Hall?

xo.

I know Corey Feldman had a smack problem, but he wasn't part of the Brat Pack proper.  AMH had a battle with the booze.
James Spader was part of the Brat Pack, if his roles in "Pretty in Pink," and "Less Than Zero" qualify him.  He's one of the better actors of that group.  I really liked The Bangles' version of S&G's "Hazy Shade of Winter," featured in LTZ.

I thought he was hilarious in that role, b/c he was so uptight too. I believe he is now in that series Kingdom Hospital on ABC, but he did really well in a tv movie called The Sight, a super natural thriller.

Emilio Estevez's biggest thing since the mighty ducks has been that movie he did w/ Charlie Sheen called Rated X. It looks like he has some movies coming out this year, but it may be really low budget. I really liked him in Young Guns.

I think Anthony Michael Hall did have a problem w/ drugs. It was around the same time he was doing SNL. Glad to see he came through it better, ala the Dead Zone. Really excellent acting.

Several of them had drug problems at one time or other. I heard Demi Moore almost got fired from St Elmo's Fire because of some drinking or drug problems, the director had insisted she get help.

Ally Sheedy also spent some time in rehab around the time she was involved with Ritchie Sambora of Bon Jovi.
