Subject: Make a list of New Wave bands for me?

Written By: Amethyst on 02/10/04 at 10:17 p.m.

I love New Wave, unfortunately I was a little too young in the 80s to really have a good memory of what bands make up the movement.  Also, my family didn't get MTV.  Help out a deprived child, and I will love you forever.  Thanks ;)

I love Psychedelic Furs and the Cure.  Also, I'm listening to the Smiths a lot.  Someone told me that they're considered Goth.  Although, I'm having trouble tracing that musical movement too.  Any help is immensely appreciated!

You can also do some research by going to Amazon.com, and type in Just Can't Get Enough under Popular Music, & you'll get alot of New Wave results! Chances are you'll also be able to hear some song samples too!  :)

If you like to watch the videos and don't have VH1 Classic, I could reccomend some DVDs like "Best of New Wave", "More New Wave", "Essential Music Videos: Classic '80's", and  "Essential Music Videos: Hits of the '80's".
Since the CDs/artists were already mentioned.  :)
Some bands like Erasure, Devo, Duran Duran, and The Clash have their  video collections on DVD

Ultravox
OMD (Orchestral Maneauvers in the Dark)

If you want to hear a good New Wave sound, I recommend listening to Kim Wilde's stuff before 1985 and Thomas Dolby.

Hi Amethyst,

There's a thread here (currently on page 3) entitled "Forgotten Bands from the 80's" http://www.inthe00s.com/cgi-bin/YaBB/YaBB.cgi?board=inthe80s&action=display&num=1073930988
It has tons of 80's bands listed. You could probably spend a lifetime going through the bands on that thread so I could recommend focusing your search by looking for bands that may be similar to the one's you already know and like. Then again the cool thing about the 80's was the exposure to new music, hence the name New Wave, so it may be in your best interest to just pick bands at random and check them out. That’s what I used to do to build my original vinyl collection and even though I picked some stinkers, I’m glad I kept an open mind. Now with the Web you can check out music much more easily before you lay down the cash.

Also Izod was right. There's a 15 CD collection (of individual CD's, I don't think it's ever been put together as a boxed set) by Rhino Records called "Just Can't Get Enough". It is probably the best New Wave collection out there. Even if you use it to find out the names of bands or songs, it's a great resource.

Then there are the music directories on the Web…
I'd recommend using All Music Guide (AMG) @ http://www.allmusic.com/.  You can search for artists, albums, songs, styles, and labels. It's probably the best overall music resource on the Web.

A precursor to AMG, but not related, is Trouser Press @ http://www.trouserpress.com/. It was originally The Trouser Press Guide to New Wave Records and was for many, many years my #1 resource for finding out information on bands and releases. The majority of it’s content is 80’s related music, but it actually starts in the 70’s and continues to today.

Kudos to you already by the way as The Psychedelic Furs, The Cure and The Smiths are a FANTASTIC start!!! (Oh yeah the Smith’s weren’t a Goth band, but a lot of Goth's listen to The Smiths. But I won’t go any further into that as it’s been discussed a few times here already.)

Gothic music is a whole other topic altogether and probably my favorite type of music! It's a genre of music that has splintered into multiple sub-genres over its 25 years and because of that, there are many opinions as to what is and what isn't Goth. That can be a touchy subject with some but if you keep an open mind and 'read between the lines' so to speak, just about everyone can teach you something about it. This Website is probably a good start if you want to learn about it's history, influences, and the early bands in the scene.

Good luck and don’t hesitate to come back with more questions!

Suggest you pick up on 80s shows aired on the radio.  What might be termed as new wave was a synthesized sound  in some of the rock music in the early 80s. Most groups of the time probably wouldn't consider themselves labeled as new wave. They were just state of the art rock for the period.  New Wave was actually a name created to commercialize the punk rock music and style of the 70s which had been shunned and ignored at the time.

I put together a list of 80s bands for a t-shirt I was gonna make to support the website.

Turns out the company that prints the t-shirts doesn't allow designs which mention band names, so that never happened.  Here's the picture though.  It's a pdf, and covers over 350 new wave bands.  Except for the Pretenders, whom I somehow overlooked (d'oh!)
