Subject: Local Bands

Written By: eightiesfan on 02/16/04 at 08:02 a.m.

Does anybody have an artist or rock group from their hometown who's famous or semi-famous?

There are two bands in my hometown of Milwaukee WI that are sort of cult favorites - The Bodeans and the Violent Femmes.  The Bodeans even managed to have a top 40 hit with the song "Closer to Free" (used as the theme song to the tv series Party of Five).  8) ;D

I suppose fame depends on, as a fan, who you are, where you are, and what you're into. These 4 artists/bands are all very famous in their chosen fields but I'd venture to guess that only 2 are known to the general public.

Cab Calloway
Lou Gramm (Foreigner)
Lydia Lunch
Chesterfield Kings

Unfortunately, our only claim to fame is Lil' Bow Wow.

Zed & Stringr--Where are you from again?
Eighties fan: I like both the V.Femmes and The Bodeans.  My favorite song by the latter was an alternative radio hit in the '80s, "Fadeaway."

Here is a selected list of Boston area bands known nationally on the pop, college, or punk circuits, or in the annals of pop history.  Truth be know, I'm not a very big fan of the Boston scene.  It's too provincial and too garage-rock oriented.  My favorite Boston band of all time, Birdsongs of the Mesozoicstarted as an artsy improv/ensemble rock group c. 1980, and are now more jazz than anything else.

NH
Aerosmith
The Shaggs
GG Allin

Boston:
Boston
The Cars
J. Geills Band
'Til Tuesday
The Pixies
Frank Black
O Positive
Johnny Thunders & The Daughters
Lyres
Willie "Loco" Alexander
Birdsongs of the Mesozoic
Mission of Burma
Roger Miller (of BSOTM & Mission of Burma)
Erik Lindgren (of BSOTM, aka "The Space Negros," et al.)
Ken Field (of BSOTM)
Ken Field's Revolutionary Snake Ensemble
Throwing Muses
Dirt Merchants
The Breeders
Sam Black Church
Cul de Sac
Morphine
Dinosaur, Jr.
Slapshot
The Dropkick Murphys
The Fleshtones
Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers
Human Sexual Response
Madder Rose
The Foools
DMZ
Dogzilla
Blake Babies

Hmmm...the only 2 that come to mind right now from the Philly area are Hall & Oates and the Hooters.  I'm sure there are more but I can't think of them now.

Then of course there's my personal fave, Robert Hazard, (Girls Just Wanna Have Fun'), but few people know he wrote the song ( I guess that makes him semi-famous?)  ;D

Although I haven't heard it in years, "Fadeaway" is a great song.  When I hear the Violent Femmes on the radio these days they usually play "Blister in the Sun" ; I don't know if anyone outside of Wisconsin might be familiar with that song.

Boston is going to be hard to beat for dam good bands!  I surmise only NYC and LA will be able to match Boston, a few good groups sprung out of Minnapolis and a handful from Athens, GA.  From my hometown, Lexington, KY, came Richard Hell & the Voidoids :o

That whole first V.Femmes album is classic.  "Blister in the Sun," and other tracks were huge alternative hits all over America.  Unfortunately, the group weakened as time went on.  The 1986 album "The Blind Leading The Naked" had only a couple of tracks.  The funky gospel number, "Faith," and the cover T-Rex's "Children of the Revolution."  I thought the early '90s hit "American Music" was funny, but it didn't compare to the classic stuff.

My hometown has quite a few (in no particular order):

Alice Cooper
Mitch Ryder
MC-5
Iggy Pop
The White Stripes
Eminem
Kid Rock
Aretha Franklin
Smokey Robinson
Stevie Wonder (Actually from Flint, but was really part of the motown scene)

Can you guess the city? (Should be pretty easy)

Flint, Stevie's from Flint?  Didn't Larry Flynt, no not Flynt?  OK well I gotta go 'coz Dinesh De Suza is on the Dennis Miller show.

No, I gotta it, wait a second--Casey Kasem & Bob Eubanks are both from Flynt.  See Bob Eubanks in Michael Moore's "Roger & Me" (1988)

My hometown of Southport, Lancashire, UK, has 2 claims to rock fame.

1. Marc Almond of Soft Cell
2. Gomez (UK sort of Indy band, won the Mercury Music prize a few years ago, pretty much disappeared now).

...and for any Brits reading, yes, I know that Southport is in the county of Merseyside now, however it was in Lancashire when I was born and as far as I'm concerned that's where it's staying, so there.
