Subject: 80's clothes

Written By: JohnTaylorsHeart on 02/17/04 at 09:29 a.m.

Here's a question for everyone on the board. Since  the clothes from the 80's are back. Are you going to wear them again? The clothes are one of things I loved about the 80's. That and the music.

What clothes are talking about exactly? I guess it depends on the item and trend. Good question though! :D

I don't know if I could still pull off the things I used to wear at 20 now that I'm 40! LOL  But seriously, I guess it would depend on what they were.

OK, so I've seen some hints at it - but still, alas, only hints.  I guess in a few years.    ::)

Yes, I'd definitely wear it again - as long as I can hide the cellulite!      ;D 8)

Most of the new wave clothes are back in style. Just this morning I brought a pink and black striped skirt. They also brought back stone washed jeans. ( Now that I would never wear again. Not even if you paid me.) ;D

Some of my favorite 80s outfits/accesories were stone-washed jeans, high top sneakers, and long dangly earrings.

I wonder if anybody would wear outfits with shoulder pads again if they came back.

This isn't exactly clothing but I also remember when you could buy nail polish a magic marker; to me that made it much easier to polish your nails. They should bring that back too.

I would love that for nail polish and definitely alot easier to do.

I think the clothes are starting to show an 80's esque type feel. I usually can tell what those are b/c those are the clothes I like.  :D

'80s clothes that stick out in my mind are:

- Parachute Pants
- T-Shirts that said "Frankie Says Relax", then after that they came out with T-Shirts that said "Who Cares What Frankie Said".
- Genera shirts/sweaters
- florescent shoe strings
- narrow Ties
- Izod shirts
- stone washed jeans

LOL I was just thinking about this this week!  Prince Machibelli (or whatever it was)!  :D They had fat pens about 6" long w/foam tips (sorta like the cheap shoe polisher concept).  This is something I miss - I've been doing my nails more the last few weeks and was wondering "whatever happened to...."

Actually, likewise I have picked up 80s-esque stuff over the last year or so.  Facconable is much into bright colors, that coupled w/the sharp style made my heart go lite and my brain think I'm in Limited again looking at Forenza!!!!     :-* ;D

I just haven't seen ENOUGH of it, that's why I doubt there's a real "revival"!

I don't think I'm gonna be wearing 80's clothes anymore,No offense but I think I've outgrown clothes from 15 20 years ago. They would be too big on me.I once wore Jordache Jeans but my butt was way too big for those type of pants. ;D

I actually still have many of my actual clothes from the 80s (But alas, some of them no longer fit!)  But I STILL wear my 80s "new wave" jackets with the band buttons on the lapels for some occasions..and when Im REALLY feeling wild, I wear my girls stuff (rah rah skirts, Betsey Johnson crinoline skirts and bustiers) to 80s nights at clubs and concerts!  For me, the 80s fashions never left me!

Lots of types of boots were popular in the 80s.  I wore cowboy boots, had several pairs, and wore them from Alabama to Seattle and in between.  I always thought they made me look cool in my own mind. Also combat boots, and hi top tennis shoe type boots were in style and plenty of pairs of Levis.

Do you all remember a  fad of wearing suspenders, but not wearing them UP? You just let them hang around your waist and butt. It was such a dumb idea! It was around the time of wearing denim overalls with one strap undone, or both undone. I guess it was a "Dexy's Midnight Runners" look or something!

Dexy's was early '80s, as were suspenders, generally, from my recollection.  (I think it was partly from the Mork&Mindy madhouse.)  I definitely recall suspenders - I wore them and you could do it later in the '80s too - but not too much in the "unused" mode.  I'm sure I saw it done, just not much, and like suspenders mostly in the earlier-mid- '80s.  You wore suspenders w/suits, too - I recall my older sis' black/white pinstripe suit was w/suspenders (hidden under a jacket).  The overalls w/1 suspender unhooked was definitely '86-'87 (I did that too), so I count that as a bit separate from the general suspenders craze.

-bangles and other funky 80s bracelets

Are 70's clothers or 80's clothes cooler? My vote would go to the 80's mainly because I feel that 80's clothes are much more vibrant and colorful and look more fun to me.  8)

I didn't have much of a wardrobe growing up (my $$$ - or rather, £££, went on computer game cassettes).

I do remember - and have photos of - white trousers, white cardigans, pink shirts; sort of half-Miami Vice, half-loser clothes. Oh well, I'm making up for it now in my late-20s :)

I agree.  I think overall '80s stuff is much more fun - and less yucky.  Serious Disco-era stuff wasn't so bad, actually quite good, plain colors and nice cuts (except still, stupid lapels and bellbottoms on men), but overall the '70s was pretty yucky.  Come on, people, don't you recall the god-awful puke colors they combined in 1 piece of clothing?  Yikes!  Every1 accuses '80s of being bad now, but the puke yellow, red, brown and even purple(!) they'd put together sometimes....w/blotches of this or that - aaaaaaa!  Sometimes instead of puke, there would be more vibrant colors but they'd be in such a fashion it just didn't sit well.  I won't mention the clod-hopper platform shoes, cuz they weren't as bad as the 90s "retro" stuff - or as prevalent!

At the very least, if the '70s wasn't god-awful combos, it was depressing!

In the U.K 80's stuff was big last year though there still is some stuff around now.Personally some of it was hideous in the 80's so no I definatly wouldn't wear something now I didn't even wear then !
The shops here are full of 50's style stuff at the moment.Though apparently 80's style power suits are the big thing for this summer.

I just received the black Members Only jacket that I bought on eBay. It's still in mint condition! I love it!

I'm beginning to sport the 80s look (I'm 18) and along with the Members Only Jacket and a few Lacoste polos, not to mention a pair of Adidas Superstars II, what other items of clothing would you suggest (for summer)?

ME TOO!  I loved that stuff!

And the club clothes!  I remember back in '82 and '83, alot of the girls wore the pants that either buttoned at the ankle or had elastic around the ankle, the stores were full of them.  And the striped tops, they came in every color combo you could imagine, but most were the black and white striped.  I just bought one a few months ago, and my husband even said, that's so cute, like early '80's.

I stil have some of my old shirts. I still fit into them too  ;) - but, unfortunately, I don't go anywhere where they'd 'blend in' these days. I mean, where in the wilds of the countryside (SW England) can a middle-aged man (i.e. me  :( ) go around dressed black, lace-trimmed shirts with huge, baggy sleeves and choker necks? Oh, what the heck! Maybe I will anyhow....   ;D

best wishes

Wow, the tri-color Converse were really cool  for those who had them. I actually wore one red and one green at the same time to give that effect.

Aslo on the shoe topic....

Penny Loafers were an item for those of us going through our "preppy" phases. And don't forget VANS checkered slip-ons.

To go with the VANS? Ocean Pacific. Everyone had atleast half a dozen items from OP.... atleast at my ritzy high-school in Toronto (I was the poor one of the school, I only had two shirts).
