The Alarm as The Poppyfields?...a new trend in "boy bands", maybe we could get N'Sync to stand in for the next Rolling Stones album... ;)

Aging Rockers Pose as Teenagers to Hit Charts
Fri February 20, 2004 08:35 AM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - An aging UK rock group gave themselves a facelift by getting a group of teenagers to stand in for them on the video of their latest song, helping them score their first chart hit for some 15 years.
Convinced the music industry is prejudiced against wrinkly rockers, The Alarm gave themselves the pseudonym The Poppyfields and persuaded a group of fresh-faced youths to mime their part.

"They did it to show they wanted to be judged on music and not on their image and haircuts of 15 years ago," said a spokesman for the band.

The single, 45RPM, went into the UK charts this week at number 28.

The Welsh band were previously best known for 1983 hit "68 guns" and said they pulled the stunt to show how much image affected sales in the music industry.

Well, atleast today's youth has  a taste of real music instead of the manufactured trash today.

uhm, no. the article pointed out that the band set to decieve todays youth. i don't think most of those teens knew who the band were or why they were asked to be in the video. most kids today (like most kids of the past) don't give a toss about the past.

To me it seems like the whole point was to show that good music is appreciated in spite of image.  The Alarm should be saluted!

I thought it was bad enough when they had skinny chicks standing in for fat singers, as happened with Romeo Void (A Girl in Trouble), and C+C Music Factory (Everybody Dance Now).

I didn't know The Alarm were back together.  Didn't Mike Peters have another project going? Christian-oriented rock?
My favorite Alarm song is "Strength."

Fred Durst has been pretending to be a teenager for years.

Meanwhile teen pop singers are trying to look older by wearing risque clothing!

Lol! I think I only liked one of his songs.

Yes, well done to The Alarm. Their success seems to have proved their point.

The same for Puff Daddy, Blink 182 (most in their mid/late 20's), and Gwen Stefanie.

strange... I remember seeing the video for "Never Say Never" on VH-1 Classics not too long ago, and it was certainly the lead singer (no skinny girl).

This is of course the reason Milli Vanilli came into existence incidently.  Only in that case they tried to deceive us much longer (and it was only done to make cash).  Had the Alarm done this for six months, people would be pretty upset when they found out.

It's still pretty cool though, I always liked the Alarm, and it's a pretty gutsy move for them to try it.

Interesting thought...

The members of New Order (I believe) have never been in one of their own video's but they've never used a pseudonym. I did however see their video "Crystal" once but didn't see the opening credits. I thought these young kids were a New Order rip-off. When it ended and I saw the New Order credit I started laughing cause I remembered they didn't appear in their own videos.

Did anyone see the The Poppyfields video and recognize it as sounding like The Alarm?

I was referring to "A Girl in Trouble (is A Temporary Thing)," in which the star of the video was a skinny blonde model.  They did include a rather obscure image of the lead singer's face, singing as though she was an animated picture on a billboard.  However, they didn't have her dancing around like Madonna or the Go Gos.
The woman in C+C Music Factory was one of the Weathergirls ("It's Raining Men"), who were quite, erm, Rubenesque.  In the video they had a skinny girl lip syncing "Everybody Dance Now!"

Shame on you, MS! (j/k) ;-) You mean you didn't see The Alarm episode of "Bands Reunited" on VH-1 several weeks ago? ??? I had a good feeling that at least two or three of the 7 groups that VH-1 was able to successfully bring back together in that series would likely hold together a while longer as a result, and apparently The Alarm was one of them. (I'm assuming we're talking the original members here.) I haven't yet heard The Poppyfields song, but I say, good for them, because the whole youth/image thing in videos is very true today...
