Here's one I just discovered after all these years
Care: Flaming Sword (1983)
This was producer Ian Broudie who later had a huge hit with
"Pure," as The Lightning Seeds.
And if you've got a "Flaming Sword," it might be because you've got a "Flaming Desire" (Bill Nelson, 1981)

Hope these aren't repeats--
King: Love & Pride
When in Rome: The Promise
Peter Schilling: Major Tom (Coming Home)
Fiction Factory: (Feels Like) Heaven
Double (Doo-blay): The Captain of Her Heart
Q-Feel: Dancing in Heaven (Orbital Be Bop)
Shannon: Let the Music Play
Autograph: Turn Up Your Radio
Trio:
Da Da Da I Don't Love You You Don't Love Me Aha Aha Aha  :P
Jermaine Stewart:
We Don't Have Take Our Clothes Off (To Have a Good Time)
Jump & The Saddle Band: The Curly Shuffle
Baltimora (R.I.P.): Tarzan Boy
Sly Fox: Let's Go All the Way
Tin Tin: Kiss Me With Your Mouth
Translator: Everywhere that I'm Not

and so on and so on and so on

(William) Jermaine Stewart also had the hits 'Get Lucky' and 'Say it again' (which IMO is a great track from 1987/1988). I didn't know previously I saw on a website that he died in 1997 after a long illness.  :o

Steven 'Tin Tin' Duffy had another hit called 'Icing on the cake' which was more softer, but as good as 'Kiss Me'. Sidenotes: Apparently, 'Kiss Me' is based on verses of The Song of Solomon in the bible! Duffy has also been involved with the group Barenaked Ladies (after doing a little research on the net) and went to Art school with Duran Duran's John Taylor and Nick Rhodes.

Acutally Steven Duffy was the original singer for Duran Duran. He met JT at art college in like 1977 I believe.

Nick Rhodes also just did a small side project with him called The Devils. They released a cd titled Circles in like 2002 I think it was.

The one hit wonder I miss most of all from the 80's would have to be Big Country!!  :-*

Didn't Big Country have a few more hit singles in the UK?

Yeah, Stephen Duffy was in the original Duran line-up, but he quit the band because he thought they were headed nowhere. D'oh!!!  :D
Duffy recorded under the name Tin Tin (another '80s double name), as I mentioned the Tin Tin hit, "Kiss Me."  He also put out music under his own name.  One of the best overlooked '80s songs appeared on a Stephen Duffy double 10" in 1986, "Wednesday Jones." (10 Records).  Duffy also recorded as Dr. Calculus.  Their best song was an Indian-style rap number called "Perfume from Spain."  Hard to find, I'm afraid, but if you get the "She's Having A Baby" soundtrack, you'll find the follow-up, "Full of Love," which is musically just like "Perfume from Spain," but the lyrics aren't as cool.

Trivia:
Tin Tin was named after the comic book, "Tin Tin."  What was the other '80s group who took their name from that comic series?

The Stranglers were huge in the '80s.  I'm not sure how many actual "hit" single they had (none here in the US), but their record sales and tours did very well, and they had a loyal core audience.
Murray Head is first and foremost a famous British actor.  That song was from the musical "Chess."
Blancmange had a few UK hits between 1982-1985, including "Blind Vision," "Waves," "What's Your Problem," and "Living on the Ceiling."  An eccentric duo (two chaps, Steven Luscombe and Neil Arthur) who blended synths with Indian instruments, Blancmange rubbed too many people the wrong way to maintain their success.  They're still one of my favorites from the '80s.
China Crisis also had a hit with "Working With Fire and Steel."
Rockwell was the son of Motown Records founder Berry Gordy.  That's how an unknown managed to get Michael Jackson to sing on his record.  Rockwell also adopted a faux British accent for "Somebody's Watching Me.  His follow-up, "Obscene Phone Caller" fizzled.

I would say that "Words" was the more well-known Missing Persons hit, Max.  (Although "Destination Unknown" was my favorite!)  They also had minor success with "Mental Hopscotch" which was not on Spring Session M but on one of their EPs.

;D

Oh, yeah, and one more thing -- did you know that Murray Head also had a one hit wonder in the 70s with "Superstar" from Jesus Christ Superstar?  He was in the production on Broadway.

Subject: Re: Obscure 80s 1 or 2 hit wonder bands.

One of the cast member of Jesus Christ Superstar, Carl Anderson, had a hit duet in 1986 with Days of Our Lives star Gloria Loring (who also sang the Facts of Life theme song) - it was called "Friend and Lover"

Aye, "Words" was the bigger hit for "Missing Persons."  Dale Bozzio did a couple of explicit photo layouts for Hustler magazine.  Her husband, Terry Bozzio (IIRC), is actually a stellar percussionist who has worked with some big names.  I can't think of them off the top of my head, you'd have to go look it up.
Oh yeah, Murray Head did do "Superstar," he's a cheesy guy.

I got irritated when VH1 called Madness a "one hit wonder."  They were the biggest ska band in the world and had tons of top 20 hits in the UK and elsewhere.  If it didn't happen in America, it didn't happen at all I guess, right?  Anyway, Madness also had a US Top 40 hit with "It Must Be Love."
Ah, 1983, remember the Flashdance soundtrack?  Michael Sembello, "Maniac," and "Automatic Man."  He was more of a disco producer, as was Harold Faltermayer of "Axl F" fame (1985).  Another one from '83, Annabel Lamb.  She did a killer version of The Doors' "Riders on the Storm."

This one is actually from the 70's but I think it pretty much sums up the casual attitude of that decade: it was from a one-hit wonder group called Silver and it goes something like

We got a wham bam shang a lang and a sha la la la la la la thing.

There is a radio station where I live that plays all 70's music on Saturdays so that's the only reason I'm familiar with this tune.

Thanks, Bobby. I wish I could say the same for Canada's Capital City. I don't think it is possible to get our local 80's station to play any of his other songs. Grrrrr.

He seems to be pretty dispirited lately, over bad press on his new stuff (or perhaps lack of press, which amounts to pretty much the same thing). But, this is a bit off topic. So I'll stop right here.

Yeah. It was associated with Winston Churchill (I think due to the breed's steadfastness).

The British Bulldogs were a great tag team in the WWF back in the mid/late 80s but ended their partnership acrimoniously around 1989. Davey 'Boy' Smith continued solo as The British Bulldog from 1991 onwards, left at the end of 1992 to join WCW, came back around 1994 and won quite a few titles. He died an untimely death a few years back - I think of heart attack or something like that.

Which came first, the band or the men's briefs?  What is a Joboxer, anyway?

As for the "Russians" song, I ripped this from another board on which somebody asked the very same question:

Quoting:Anyone knows who does the song where the singer talks over the song w/lyrics similar to the following:
But I'm afraid of the Russians - I can't sleep at night.
So afraid of the Russians - afraid we'll have to fight.

As Ben already said, it's by Made for TV. There's a 7", but I have it on
an 12" EP from 1987 which appends four tracks recorded live at CBGBs.
John Cale produced the two songs from the 7" (they're the a-side of the
EP -- he's also credited with "guitar, percussion & telephone").End Quote

Of course there's always Russians by Sting (set to the music of S. Prokofiev), and this line from Jackson Browne's Lawyers In Love:

Quoting:Last night I watched the news from Washington, The Capitol
The Russians escaped while we weren't watching them, like Russians do
Now we've got all this bloom, we needn't got the room
And I hear the USSR will be open soon
As vacation land for Lawyers In Love
Lawyers In Love
Oooo Shalala Oooo
Oooo Shalala Oooo End Quote

What a funny song that was, always loved it.  It's tres '80s.  As the corporate raiding '80s heated up, the yuppie lawyer became a new stereotype.  Browne played on it in his song, and the video, which featured a yuppie lawyer rowing his BMW across a lake, and crying out under the full moon "the mating call of lawyers in love."

Yes that's true, it has been mentioned in history lessons (albeit briefly). I guess he was the British equivalent to Uncle Sam, a way of getting the British into the first world war. He isn't much of a personification to anybody British these days.

I don't really know if these would be classified as hits outside of New Jersey, but - Glen Burtnick - Little Red House and Talking in Code around 1986.  By the later 80's he was playing bars in New Brunswick, NJ and the Jersey shore.  I read something that he had a chance to be in Bon Jovi and passed it up - bad choice Glen!  He also played with a reformed Styx.

I know it was mentioned before, but Charlie Sexton (Beat So Lonely) - or as we called him - Billy Idol with black hair.

This might have been the 90s - if it is sorry - Michael Penn - No Myth.  This is still one of my favorite songs.

Sgrier -- I loved the Trash Can Sinatras.  I have their excellent album from I think it was 89 or 90, called "Cake."  I saw them when they played at CBGBs (of all places) on their tour in support of that record.  A friend of mine was in the music biz at the time, so we ended up hanging out with them after the show.  they're Scots, y'know, and a great bunch of guys.  i remember we ended up getting kicked out of this snotty, trendy bar for being too rowdy!

Don't forget that certain groups or idividuals that have gone on to fame were in fact are actually one hit wonders.

One example is Herbie Hancock. We all know the song "Rock-it" and that was it for his "mainstream" success. Yet, he is best known for his Jazz stylings.

Another is Gary Numan and "Cars". Although I'm sure we all know more than a few songs from him, that was his only hit.

Some other great one hit wonders are The Nails "88 Lines About 44 Women".

My favorite one hit wonder are the Eurogliders with "Heaven (Must Be There)".

MS, you may be surprised to learn that while Blancmange never managed any pop hits here in the U.S., they did actually score quite a few on the dance chart: "Living on the Ceiling" (Winter of '83), "Blind Vision" (Summer of '83), "That's Love, That it Is" (twice - Winter of '84 and again in Winter of '85), "Don't Tell Me" (also twice - Summer of '84 and again in Fall of '84), and "Lose Your Love" (Winter of '86). In fact, both "Blind Vision" and "Lose Your Love" made the top 3! So they did have their share of hits here, too...

I always thought of One Hit Wonders as artists famous for one song and nothing else.  Eurogliders and The Nails are good examples.  Whereas Herbie Hancock was and is a BIIIG DEAL in the jazz world.  He was the hottest young jazz keyboardist  in the '60s.  In Miles Davis's band, along with bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams, he helped Davis define the electric fusion sound, one of THE major styles of contemporary jazz.  Hancock was also huge in '70s jazz with his own band, the Head Hunters.
In 1983 he just happened to employ some of the inchoate hip-hop scratchin' sounds into a four minute number called "Rockit."  With the help of a really strange video, the song took off in the pop domain.
Gary Numan is best known for "Cars," but he had several other hits in the UK, and maintained a loyal following for 25 years.  The Gary Numan sound was one of the defining styles of New Wave music.  He spent as much time on his other career as a pilot, but he released music pretty consistantly for the two decades after his burst of superstardom died down.  By my definition, Numan is far too influential to be a bona-fide One Hit Wonder.
Baltimora is another good example of a One Hit Wonder.  He was famous for "Tarzan Boy," and that's it.  His follow up, "The Woody Boogie" went nowhere.  Sadly, he died of AIDS sometime in the '90s. Baltimora had no other claim to fame or influence, his name just goes with a funny song.

What you are stating here is true, and that's kinda' what I was saying in the first place. I TOTALY agree with the fact that Numan was/is a huge influence. But, I look at a "hit" being one that hits the mainstream. And in that, I would would say "mainstream" would be that the average person liked the song then went out and bought the 45rpm. That's what I meant by "Although I'm sure we all know more than a few songs from him, that was his only hit.". Maybe I just look at breaking Top 40 radio and getting lots of airplay defines "hit".

I think we're in agreence with each other. It's just that I said it in a different way.

Actually Nena Musaka (sp?) was always a big star in Europe, particularly the German countries, like Malene Deitric in the 40's (?). I only know this because I was a tech for a German show at a local community radio station.  :) And no, I don't speak German. But my hostess spoke English.
This one, however, was a widespread hit, and probably made her more money than all other songs combined.
