Subject: Another Major Tom Question

Written By: thegreatnorthern on 02/27/04 at 07:13 p.m.

I downloaded the extended version of Major Tom, and after the last stanza ("across the stratisphere etc.") he seems to sing the chorus in what sounds like German ???, but only one time. I know absolutely no German and could be totally and completely wrong, but if anyone else has heard this particular version and can set me straight, please let me know. Also, if it is indeed German, does anyone have a translation?

You are not wrong at all, Peter Schilling who sang the song is german and the song was originally in german!!! Both versions are available on his album Error In The System!

As for the translation, I can't help you there but at a guess I would say that it is the german lyrics to the song!

he may have sung the chorus in german in the extended mix, but i don't think he would change the words in any way. i love this song and i have the album "error in the system" on tape.

here's the lyrics.

MAJOR TOM (COMING HOME)
Peter Schilling

Standing there alone,
the ship is waiting.
All systems are go.
"Are you sure?"
Control is not convinced,
but the computer
has the evidence.
No need to abort.
The countdown starts.

Watching in a trance,
the crew is certain.
Nothing left to chance,
all is working.
Trying to relax
up in the capsule
"Send me up a drink."
jokes Major Tom.
The count goes on...

4, 3, 2, 1
Earth below us
drifting, falling.
Floating weightless
calling, calling home...

Second stage is cut.
We're now in orbit.
Stabilizers up,
runnning perfect.
Starting to collect
requested data.
"What will it affect
when all is done?"
thinks Major Tom.

Back at ground control,
there is a problem.
"Go to rockets full."
Not responding.
"Hello Major Tom.
Are you receiving?
Turn the thrusters on.
We're standing by."
There's no reply.

4, 3, 2, 1
Earth below us
drifting, falling.
Floating weightless
calling, calling home...

Across the stratosphere,
a final message:
"Give my wife my love."
Then nothing more.

Far beneath the ship,
the world is mourning.
They don't realize
he's alive.
No one understands,
but Major Tom sees.
"Now the light commands
this is my home,
I'm coming home."

Earth below us
drifting, falling.
Floating weightless
coming home...
Earth below us
drifting, falling.
Floating weightless
coming, coming
home...
home.....

D'oh!! Sorry the album the german version is from was called Fehler Im System! from 1982!!!! Error In The System was from 1983!

Major Tom (Vollig losgelost)

Gruendlich durchgecheckt
steht sie da
und wartet auf den Start
Alles klar.
Experten streiten sich
um ein paar Daten
die Crew hat dann noch
ein paar Fragen, doch
der Countdown lauft.

Effektavitat
bestimmt das Hendeln
Man verlaesst sich blind
auf den andern
jeder weiss genau
was von ihm abhangt,
jeder ist im Streb,
doch Major Tom
macht einen Scherz.
Dann hebt er ab und...

Voellig losgeloest
von der Erde
schwebt das Raumschiff
vollig schwerelos

Die Erdanziehungskraft
ist uberwunden
Alles lauft perfekt
schon seit Stunden
Wissenschaftliche
Experimente,
doch was nutzen die
am Ende denkt
sich Major Tom.

Im Kontrollzentrum
da wird man panisch.
Der Kurs der Kapsel der
stimmt ja gar nicht.
Hallo Major Tom
koennen Sie hoeren
wollen Sie das Projekt
denn so zerstoeren, doch
er kann nichts hoeren
er schwebt weiter

Voellig losgeloest
von der Erde
schwebt das Raumschiff
vollig schwerelos

Die Erde schimmert blau
Sein letzter Funk kommt:
"Gruesst mir meine Frau"
Und er verstummt

Unten trauern noch
die Egoisten,
Major Tom denkt sich
Wenn die wuessten,
mich fuhrt hier ein Licht
durch das All,
das kennt ihr noch nicht,

ich komme bald
Mir wird kalt.

My little brother thought the song said
"floating waiters," rather than "floating weightless."
I was like, "why would it say 'floating waiters'?  Doesn't make any sense, ya dummy!"  But he insisted it was "floating waiters" nonetheless.  He was a funny kid.

Major Tom was the character in David Bowie's song "Space Oddity"  (as in "Ground Control to Major Tom...")

I laughed so hard at the "floating waiters" interpretation, Max!  ;D Your kid brother must have been very entertaining!

Major Tom makes an appearance in "Ashes to Ashes."
"Ashes to Ashes, Funk to Funky, we all know Major Tom's a junky, strung out in heaven, hitting an all time low..."

My kid brother used to drive us nuts singing commercial jingles incessantly.  "Feeling 7-UP, I'm feeling 7-UP.....,"  "What have they done to my Oatmeal...." "Take Five--Five Alive...!"
Stuart, shut the hell up, you'fe driving us nuts!  ;D

Max, my kid is very sensitive, and she started crying when she read the lyrics to Major Tom. When she read about your brother singing commercials and how you reacted to it, she and I both guffawed :D. Any more examples of what he used to do (or still does)?

There sure are, but I'd have to think of some relevant to the '80s per se.
BTW, I was a very sensitive kid, too! :)
