Gold Rush Ice Cream Bars (chocolate coating, vanilla ice cream with caramel and peanut butter inside - yum)

Snack Pack pudding (used to come in tin cans when I was a little kid, around 1985 they switched to the little plastic cups)

Comfort food? By this I hope you mean the stuff that made me feel good.

Nothing beats Pop Rocks and Coke (it is true, you're head will explode).

And who could not forget Froot Loops. The essential beginning to any 80's day.

Did you ever hear that rumor that Mikey from the Life Cereal commercial died from a combination of Pop Rocks and Coke? It isn't true of course, but I wonder how that myth got started.

Now N Later hard candy.  Yeah, hard to get out of your teeth!
Eat some now, pick 'em out of your teeth later!
Velamints were definitely something you'd find in a grandmother's purse.  I didn't care about the Velamints, I just went after her social security money...no,no, only joking! I made her sign the social security check over to me right at the bank under the threat that I'd dime out her coke dealer.
:D
Velamints I liked because they had a peculiarly slick saccharine taste.
I loved Doritos, I-Scream cookies, Nestle Crunch ice cream bars, Hires root beer, Rothschild candies, Gobstoppers...
the family dentist was a happy man!

Just another little fun fact: In 1987 red M & M's were being made again after being discontinued back in the 60's or 70's because people believed that the red dye was cancerous.

Of course, I like the green ones best myself.  :D

Fast food comfort foods:

Chicken McNuggets, chocolate shakes, and hotcakes and sausage from McDonald's

Kentucky Fried Chicken - original or Extra Crispy works

Peanut Buster Parfait - Dairy Queen

Roast beef sandwiches and curly fries from Arby's

I'd better quit now before I feel tempted to cheat!

Among my favorites were:

- The Jello Pudding Pies (Chocolate or Vanilla pudding in the middle)
- Doritos (Especially the Taco flavor. There was another flavor that came out in the late '80s. It was some kind of ranch, but it wasn't Cool Ranch. I found those highly addictive and I couldn't find them once I went to college, so I had mom and dad ship me bags and bags of 'em.)
- Tato Skins
- The McDonald's McDLT

Two of my favorite 80's comfor foods:

McDonald's McRib Sandwich - Was billed as the "no Bones Barbeque".  A buddy of mine broke a tooth on one and sued.

McDonald's McDLT - Who DOESN'T love a sandwich that you have to assemble yourself!

The green ones, eh?  You mean for St. Patrick's Day...
Oh, wait a minute, now I remember that old legend of the green M&M.  Here's an interesting link about it:
http://www.snopes.com/risque/aphrodis/mandm.htm

Curious fact from the same site:
In 1981, Amblin Productions approached the Mars candy company and asked them if they would like M&Ms to be used as a prop in a movie called E.T., The Extraterrestrial.  For whatever reason, Mars declined the offer.  D'ohhh!
The production company next turned to Hershey Foods, and..now... you know... the rest of the story!
:D

Coincidentally, the same week Mars reintroduced the red M&Ms, I streaked my hair with red highlights.  I went into the convenience store and bought a bag of M&Ms, the clerk, looking very amused, said, "Hey, the red ones are back!"

Anyone out there remember M & M Royals? Those were the mint flavored ones that Mars briefly put out in the early 80's. Those were awesome!  8)

The last time I saw Mint M & M's was when I bought some at the supermarket at Christmas time 2002.

FYI: If you're ever in Vegas sometime and can tear yourself away from the slots, there's a neat store called M & M's World - they have just about every color of M & M's ever invented along with the M & M shirts, coffee mugs, other
M & M related souvenirs.

Whatever happened to Baby Watson?  There was a place in Harvard Square in the '80s called Baby Watson.  The sold pastries and sandwiches, I think.  One of their items was called the "Chocolate Orgasm."  It was supposed to be risque and funny--but it wasn't.  The Baby Watson in Harvard Square disappeared over ten years ago.

I'm a lifelong ice cream junkie.  I used to buy Frusen Gladje, it was a good premium ice cream.  It was a little creamier than Haagen Dasz, but not as flavorful as Ben & Jerry's.  I didn't notice exactly when it disappeared.  Right now, Godiva makes a darn good ice cream.

Your 7-11 products are indicative of American excess.  When they introduced the Big Gulp, my first thought was, "Who the heck needs 32 ounces of soft drink in one go?"  The same question worked its way into numerous stand up comic routines.  Of course, you need a "Big Bite" hot dog to go with that "Big Gulp."  I feel a bit nauseous just thinking about it.

7-11 had the Slurpie, other convenience stores sold a "Slush Puppy."  Can you think of any other flavored ice drinks, I know there were others.

Oh, wait a minute, the commercial didn't go like that, um, well let me post these comments while I try and remember...
My nightly ritual was David Letterman and a pint of Cherry Garcia. :)
I remember when McNuggets came out, and the counter-campaign from BK slogan "parts is parts." McD's then printed on their McNuggets boxes "choice cuts from the breast and thigh," or something like that.
What year did Munchkins appear, 1984?  I remember Dunkin's introduced Muffins in '82.  The commercials had grandmotherly types saying, "Tastes just like MY recipe, I'll see you in court, sonny!," and "Well, I won't be needing these anymore" (in re muffin pans).  "New Dunkin' Donuts Muffins just may put grandma out of business!"  Nevermind that DD muffins are the lardiest, sugariest muffins you ever ate!  Shortly thereafter, DD started its campaign with commercial actor Michael Vale, and one of the most famous slogans of the '80s, "TIME TO MAKE THE DONUTS!"

Charleston Chews were a big favorite of mine in childhood.  I liked vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry CCs.  I think they had banana ones at some point.  The mini-bars are good, too.  All the CC enjoyment, but not quite so awkward.  I never asked myself what exactly the CC was made of.
We had an 1890s-style ice cream parlor nearby called "The Idle '90s."  Picture a Friendly's with an 1890s saloon decor, and you've got it about right.  Anyway, they made a great old-fashioned Coke float.  I still have a sweet tooth, but the Coke float is a little beyond what my thirty-something conscience will brook.

Never heard either term,  where are they used?  In New England we call milkshakes "frappes."  In college, I once said, "I'm going over to the snackbar to get a frappe," to which my Canadian roommate said, "What the f*** is a frappe?"
In Rhode Island only, milkshakes are (or were) called "cabinets."  I haven't been in a Rhode Island ice cream parlor since...well, I've never been in a Rhode Island ice cream parlor, so I don't know if the term is still in use, let alone how it came to be!
As for the portion of a milkshake still in the mixing container when served, there was a term for that: the "dividend."  That goes back to the '50s.

Oh yeah, I loved Marathon bars.  I sort of remember the TV commercials for them.  I'm a caramel fan in general.  I'm trying to remember the name of the chocolate bar the selling point for which was air bubbles that made it fluffy.  The TV commercial featured scientists revealing the secret ingredient, a beaker full of nothing!  Whatever it was called, I'm pretty sure they don't make it anymore.

One thing that irks me, I'm a big fan of Pepperidge Farm cookies.  You know, Milanos, Brussels, Bordeaux, Lido, Gingermen, and so forth.  They used to make  a GREAT cookie called Capuccinos.  Now they don't.  I used to buy 'em all the time in the '80s.  I'm not sure when the disappeared, but I didn't notice until the late '90s.  They keep adding new flavors to the Milano line, but they won't bring back Capuccinos!

Could it be Three Musketeers possibly?

I liked those Summit bars too; I guess candy companies stop making certain brands if they don't sell all that great.

It wasn't Three Musketeers, I'm almost positive it was a brand they don't make anymore.

Orange Julius were much better back in the day and seemed creamier. Nowadays, they are watered-down. I also see them made with a powdered mixture. I used to love them. Now I hate them. I do much better at home with vanilla ice cream and orange juice in a blender with ice.

But alas!  There is hope!  I ran across this recipe recently.  Here is the recipe for the "Orange Julius Classic."  Courtesy of cooks.com

6 oz. orange juice concentrate
1/2 to 3/4 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. milk
10 or more ice cubes
Combine all ingredients in a blender; mix well.
