Subject: Anyone remember a black rock band?

Written By: maczter on 03/02/04 at 12:47 a.m.

I have been beating my head into the wall for years trying to remember a group I had the album for around 83-84.  They were a 4, maybe 5, man rock band.  The were ALL black, their drummer as I recall was a rather large, bodybuilder type.  The cover of the album had them all in two rows, above the waist type of shot.  For some reason, Orion the Hunter rings a bell, but I dont think that was them.  They had one hit on the radio and then faded away...cannot remember them or the hit.  Anyone else have a clue?  No, it was NOT Living Colour.  Thanks in advance.

I can only remember Fishbone & The Bus Boys from the 80's. And Ice T's Body Count was from the 90's.

Th-th-th that's all folks?

Yeah the only band came to mind was Fishbone.  Maybe someone else has some ideas? ???

I liked a couple of the Busboys songs, especially "When you're falling in love," it was modern, while most of their stuff was funk.  They were in the movie, 48 hours, singing The boys are back in town.  Don't forget Living Color!

I have no idea what almost any act's people looked like; I just didn't care to notice.  So I can't help from that angle.

What was the "rival" to Prince, including in his movie "Purple Rain"?  Was that Ice House?  or Ice Castles?  They had 1 real hit, "Jungle Love" - luckily I just heard this the other week for the 1st time in ages; otherwise I'd have a hard time recalling even the tune.

The band in question is The Time.  The lead singer was Morris Day.  Their biggest hits were "Jungle Love", "Ice Cream Castles", "The Bird," and "Cool." Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were also in The Time.  They're best known for producing Janet Jackson and others.  Jesse Johnson was the guitar player for The Time and he helped compose the music from "The Breakfast Club" and had a couple minor hits, including one on the "Pretty In Pink" soundtrack and sounds very "Prince-ish".  Prince actually produced at least some of The Time's albums.  He went under the moniker of "Jamie Starr" who also produced Vanity 6, Appolonia 6, Sheila E, Andre' Cymone, etc.

I know, probably more information than you wanted!   ;D

Umm, not to sound too sensitive but "a black rock band" almost seems to imply that being "black" and "rock" are seperate and exclusive...and that is not the case.
Let's see now there was:
Fishbone
Living Colour
The Bus Boys
Body Count
Prince (with or with out The Revolution)
these have already been mentioned but there was also
24-7 Spyz
Infectious Grooves
Lenny Kravitz (not a band, but definitely a rocker)
Bad Brains
Funkadelic

From what was described the band you're talking about it was probably Bad Brains. A very powerful group and the only ones that would be "popular" enough in the 80's to make a difference. Bad Brains was a group of Rastafarians led by HR that had a huge following in the semi underground scene...many bands were and are influenced by their very aggressive sound.

Second to that Funkadelic was one of the most influential bands of its era, and part of the original band was still rockin with Parlement/Funkadelic w/George Clinton well into the 80's.

Remember Morris had a sidekick named Jerome?

Jerome would hold a mirror up to Morris' face while he sang, so that he could primp his hair.  :P

Living Colour - "Cult Of Personality" was pretty rockin'.  Unfortunately, I think the band did it to gain fame then switch to blues or some other crap...  :(

No it was none of these mentioned.  They were definately rock, that's what made them different.  They were not a pop rock, like Prince or the Time....they were from 82-84, sometime in that time frame....but they were not hair band sound either...good vocals, great guitars....this is gonna make me crazy before it is over.

About three months ago, I was watching a "Metal Mania" segment on VH-1 Classic. At that time, they aired a video by an all-black hard rock band, which I'd never heard or seen before. Then just last week, I saw that same group/video for the 2nd time, also during a "Metal Mania" hour. They were exactly as you describe, and based on their looks, I'd also place the video circa 1983-84. So I'm almost positive that the band I saw on VH-1 Classic was the one you're looking for. They did sound pretty good, and because I know I'd never heard of them before, I can vouch that they were indeed one-hit wonders, as you mentioned. Now, if I could just remember their name! *sigh* :-( (You're right, I know it's not any of the groups that the others here have named so far - and BTW, Orion the Hunter was a white band whose guitarist was originally in the group Boston, and scored a moderate hit here in the U.S. w/ "So You Ran" in the Summer of '84. I have that album myself.)

Well, I posted to VH1 classics, and within 15 minutes had the answer.  It was a group called Xavion.  Now if I can find the album....thanks to all for the help.

Yes!  That stuff was great!  Morris Day was an excellent showman, not to mention Jerome...

Believe it or not,Sonny Sandoval of P.O.D. cites Bad Brains as an influence on P.O.D.'s sound. The boyz from Southtown even had HR on one of their songs-"Without Jah,Nothin' "from the SATELLITE cd!
