Subject: 80's most touching/inspirational songs

Written By: eightiesfan on 03/03/04 at 11:44 a.m.

I got this idea from a similar topic posted at the 70's section of the mesageboard. Here are just a few off the top of my head:

Livin on a Prayer - Bon Jovi
Cest la Vie - Robbie Nevil
Everybody Wants to Rule the World and Shout - Tears for Fears
Never Surrender - Corey Hart

Try these.......

"The Living Years" - Foreigner
"Suffer The Children" - Tears For Fears
"Vienna" - Ultravox
"Save A Prayer" - Duran Duran
"No One Is To Blame" - Howard Jones

I thought "The Living Years" was done by Mike & the Mechnics, unless you're referring to a different song.

Excellent choices!

Inspiration comes from what is said in the song-the titles do not, necessarily, reflect this.

New Song/ No One is to Blame- Howard Jones
 (On the)Wings of a Dove-Madness
The Promise-When in Rome (wasn't that 80something?)
Ebony and Ivory- Stevie Wonder feat. Paul McCartney
Do They Know It's Christmas--*Band-Aid*
Look of Love - ABC
 Sea of Love- "the honeydrippers"
Rosanna/ Africa-Toto  (Missing the one you love is always inspirational-or at least touchingly poignant for listeners)

Here's a few more I thought of:

Lean on Me - Club Nouveau
Every Rose Has Its Thorn - Poison
Welcome to the Boomtown - David and David
I Want to Know What Love Is - Foreigner
Six Months in a Leaky Boat - Split Enz
Man in the Mirror - Michael Jackson

You are so right! My bad. I appreciate you correcting it.

I was confused between "The Living Years" -  Mike & the Mechanics and "I wanna' know what love is" - Foreigner

here's one...

Greatest love of all-Whitney Houston

OH AND..
Voices that care-Various Artists (remember this one? Kindof like "we are the world"...

Peter Cetera-You're The Inspiration

The first one I thought of was:
Neil Diamond: Turn on Your Heartlight (inspired by E.T.), if that's your bag.
Not to be confused with Kenny Loggins' "Welcome to Heartlight" (inspired by some hippie progressive school of that name).

For me--
Depeche Mode: Somebody
Split Enz: Message to My Girl
Aztec Camera: Knife
Sisters of Mercy: 1959
Howard Jones: What is Love?
The Call: I Don't Wanna...
ABC: 4ever 2gether (co-written by Anne Dudley)
The The: This is the Day
Yazoo: Mister Blue
The Smiths: Ask
Psychedelic Furs: My Time
Thompson Twins: Lay Your Hands on Me
Fiction Factory: (Feels Like) Heaven
Icicle Works: Out of Season
Feargal Sharkey: A Good Heart (Maria McKee)
Culture Club: Time (Clock of the Heart)
Ultravox: Hymn
Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush: Don't Give Up
Kate Bush: Hounds of Love
When In Rome: The Promise
Heaven 17: The Skin I'm In
OMD: Hold You
A Flock of Seagulls: Space Age Love Song
---And oh so many more...

Most of The Smiths/Morrissey songs were inspiring to me, but not in a conventional way, rather in my own perverse way!

Mine would be:

A Question Of Lust - Depeche Mode
Somebody - Depeche Mode
World Full Of Nothing - Depeche Mode
Blasphemous Rumours - Depeche Mode
Countless songs by The Smiths...way too many to mention
Midnight Blue - A Project With Louise Tucker
November Spawned A Monster - Morrissey
Dream Come True - Frozen Ghost (Canadians would know this one. I can't listen to it without crying.)

And how could I forget...

Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth - Martin Gore (OK, maybe not inspirational, but just...beautiful! :D)

Absolutely Vile

"I Miss You" - Clymaxx

"Hands to Heaven" - Breathe (does this make '80s?  I can't remember)

In another way, "You Got it All" - Jets

"Greatest Love of All" definitely agree

Great choices, Ab-Vi!, though I'm not sure what "Blasphemous Rumours" inspires.
;)
I've heard of Frozen Ghost, I believe they toured with Howard Jones, and a couple of them were in a band called "Sheriff," which was terrible (I saw them on an old "Evening at the Improv" from '81).  I'm not sure I know the "Dreams Come True" song.
"...Mother Earth," IS isnpirational, and beautiful, as is MLG's version of "Compulsion" from "Counterfeit e.p."

It's a song that questions religion. :)

Download it and listen to it. It's the ultimate love song/wedding song. It makes me weep everytime I hear it...to the point where I won't listen to it anymore for fear I'm just going to start crying!

I agree totally! I love the entire EP, actually. :)
