Subject: who sang this song???

Written By: dollyrocker on 03/06/04 at 02:35 a.m.

hello....don't know if anyone will remember this one, it seems a little obscure, but it has been driving me insane for about 15 years now!!! when mtv first started in LA in 82 or 83, they always played this video ( which could go in the "must haves" for an 80s video section) there is this guy, he's riding on a motorcycle and he's "on the run"...at the end or sort of midway throught the song, he is stopped by these men in hooded capes... the lyrics were something like " because tonight were on the run...into the night were on the run...we've got to prove what we can be...tonight" anyone??????

Could it be "On The Loose" by Saga?

chorus
No one can stop you now
Tonight you`re on the loose
No one to tell you how
Tonight you`re on the loose
No one can stop you now
Tonight you`re on the loose
No one to tell you how
Tonight you`re on the loose

It reminds me of 'Manfred Mann - Runner'. It reached #22 on the Billboard's pop singles charts on 1/21/84.

RUNNER
Manfred Mann's Earth Band

Through the night, through the dawn
Behind you another runner is born
Don't look back you've been there
Feel the mist as your breath hits the air
And it's underneath the moonlight
Passing some
Still your heart beats in the moonlight
Like a drum

Through the night, through the dawn
Behind you another runner is born
Don't look back, you've been there
Feel the mist as your breath hits the air
And it's underneath the moonlight
Passing some
Still your heart beats in the moonlight
Like a drum

And you will run your time
A shooting star across the sky
And you will surely cross the line
To pass on the flame
Sun come up, sun go down
Hear the feet see the sweat on the ground
Watch your step, keep your cool
Though you can't see what's in front of you

And it's underneath the moonlight
Passing some
Still your heart beats in the moonlight
Like a drum

And you will run your time
A shooting star across the sky
And you will surely cross the line
To pass on the flame
Pass on the flame
Through the night, through the dawn
Behind you another runner is born
Don't look back, you've been there
See the mist as your breath hits the air

And it's underneath the moonlight
Passing some
Still your heart beats in the moonlight
Like a drum

wow... thanks for all the responses!!! i know it isn't saga on the loose, although it sounded very much like that sort of thing...same sort of cheese factor....same sort of sound...it's not the manfred mann one either, but i appreciate the listing of the lyrics!!! and it might be the last one, by the sherbs, but i couldn't listen to it because it was only available on windows player and i have a mac...it wasn't listed under real player....i have been now trying to find the lyrics for that song somewhere, but haven't found em yet... the year is about right....i can't believe this stupid thing has been in my brain for so many years...if anyone out there has the lyrics to that sherb song...it might put me out of my misery!!!!

zcrito is correct - your "mystery song/video" is indeed "We Ride Tonight" by the Sherbs. It was a moderate AOR hit here in the U.S. in the Summer of '82. (It failed to cross over to the pop chart.) It was off the group's 1982 album, Defying Gravity. Unfortunately, the album is long out-of-print here in the U.S., although it was re-issued on CD...

You need to get VH-1 Classic - I've seen the video for "We Ride Tonight" on there at least 5-6 times in the past year! Even got it on tape one of those times it aired - your memory is fairly accurate... :-)

thank you so so so so much everyone!!!! i can't believe how long i have had this in my head and in 2 days... mystery solved....i'm envious that you have seen the video so many times!!! i have vh1 classic, but, as i now live in the uk, it's different to the one in the good old US of A and it's crap...too much really bad brit stuff that most of us have never heard of, but then mixed with decent stuff....i almost don't want to hear the song again now as i feel it won't live up to the memory....many thanks again...
