LiveAid 1985 Concert on DVD for First Time

March 8, 2004 03:05 PM EST

LONDON, Mar 08, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- A DVD of the 1985 LiveAid concert where scores of British and U.S. musicians performed to raise funds for hunger will be released for the first time.

LiveAid organizers decided to release the marathon concert on DVD after finding pirated copies for sale on the Internet for $200, BBC News Online reported Monday.

LiveAid officials said they hope to raise several million dollars through the sale of the DVD for their cause, which was started in the 1980s by Bob Geldolf to assist the people of Ethiopia during a famine.

LiveAid, held simultaneously in London and Philadelphia, was a 16-hour music event that involved the world's biggest music stars of the day, from Bob Dylan, U2 and Queen to Madonna, Duran Duran and Paul Simon.

The event raised $73 million, with half of the money spent on food and half on long-term development in Ethiopia and the surrounding area.

The DVD is scheduled for December release to enable promoters to get the necessary permissions from the participating artists.

I was just thinking about whether or not it was going to be released on DVD because 2005 will be the 20 year mark for Live Aid. That stuff is always happening. I was hoping it would too! I have never seen live aid!! I've seen bits and pieces of it but not the whole thing. I was just a baby when it aired in 85. I plan on getting the DVD and seeing it for the first time!

Yipee!  :D

I used to have it on a VHS tape but that's long gone.  At least I know a DVD will last much longer!  :)

My copy has vanished also.  Would bring back so many memories.  All those late hours trying to watch as much of the concert that I can.

Wow awesome !!  I have it spread over about 4 Beta video tapes !!  It will be great to see it in its DVD glory.

Hope its not too edited.  What I taped was entirely unedited over the whole night (it was night here !!).

As soon as it comes out in Britain, I'll be ready for it - a piece of history. I'm not sure whether it will be repeated again.
