Subject: Sid and Nancy

Written By: Rio_Rhodes on 03/08/04 at 05:39 p.m.

Who has seen this movie? I just watched it last night for the first time.

Does anyone know if Nancy was really that annoying?? Wow. I also noticed that a few people were not portrayed in that movie, one of which being Jordan. Sid and Nancy lived in Jordan's flat in her dining room for awhile. It probably isn't very important but I thought it would have been cool to see how Jordan could have been portrayed. If anyone doesn't know who Jordan is or what she looks like, I'll find a picture of her and post it here.

I did like the movie, but that might have something to do with the fact that I think Gary Oldman is a really good actor when it comes to playing musicians.

I mean, really, who else could have played Sid Vicious in one movie then be Beethoven in Immortal Beloved? He is phenomenal!! IMO anyways.

I saw "Sid & Nancy" at the cinema the day it came out!  It's a terrific movie, whether or not it portrays the events true-to-life (and death).
I wish kids didn't make punk rock martyrs out of Sid and Nancy.  Sorry Sex Pistols loyalists, but they were not nice people, and Sid had no talent for anything other than smack and violence.  The redeeming dopiness the film lends him was quite overstated.
At the time the events transpired Sid and Nancy were very young, 19 to 22 years old.  I believe Nancy was schizophrenic.  If not schizophrenic per se, psychiatric problems afflicted her terribly.  Her family reports severe behavioral problems almost from infancy.  All accounts suggest Nancy Spungen was as whiny and obnoxious as the character Chloe Webb depicts.  The film depicts her as enabling a lot of Sid's self-destructive behavior, but I doubt this was the case.
I'm also not convinced Sid murdered her.  It may have been manslaughter due to diminished capacity.  It may have been an accident altogether.  Lock two starving junkie kids in a hotel room with a huge knife and you never know what's going to happen!
I won't be a spoiler for anyone who hasn't seen the movie, but I will say this climactic scene is intensely horrifying.  You won't forget it!
I have been a big fan of Gary Oldman ever since I saw Sid & Nancy.  If you're not now, you will be.
BTW, Sid & Nancy was Alex Cox's last *major* motion picture.  His next film, "Walker" was an obscure Latin American affair.  In fact, most of his films since the late '80s have been made in Latin America.  Some good, some bad, the point is, you'd think a young director who just pulled off a big hit like "Sid & Nancy" would be primed for a big studio deal.  Unfortunately, nobody can stand the so'mb*tch!  Alex Cox is a total a-hole, and he alienated so many people that he found his bridges burned.  So, off to Mexico it was!

I didn't like the film at all.

Sorry, but if you're going to do a biographical film, at least do your homework. I don't remember much of it (thankfully) but from what I do...in the scene where Sid is singing "My Way" and then pulls a gun on the audience, they show him brandishing a rather large silver gun, when in reality is was nothing more than a small black pistol or something. I also thought the ending was sappy and stupid.

Yes, Nancy Spungeon was really that annoying and whiny. Courtney Love really should have played her instead of playing her sister. She would have been perfect for the part. Gary Oldman was OK, I guess. I'd point out other inaccuracies, but that would mean me seeing the film again and I really don't want to. :)

If you want to see a good Sex Pistols film, see The Filth And The Fury (2001). It's a Julien Temple film/documentary with interviews with the band (including old ones of Sid), clips and great humour. I love it! :)

Yes, the ending sequence was pretty dumb, but ya gotta throw the audience a bone, I guess.

I definetly felt that the ending could have been better.

I was also thinking that if Nancy really did act that way in reality, she must have had some type of mental illness.

I also DEFINETLY felt that Courtney Love would have been a better choice to play her, just because Courtney wouldn't have had to do much acting, now would she? ;).

Courtney Love was JUST getting started in the biz when she got the bit part in "Sid & Nancy."  It is most apropos, as you say, because she's so similar.  CL got a bigger role in Alex Cox's 1987 low-budget mess, "Straight to Hell."  It's ironic, the durability of Courtney's career in both cinema and music, whereas Chloe Webb--who played Nancy--has faded into oblivion!

Well, if anyones interested, I finally managed to find a picture of Jordan. I couldn't have done it if it wasn't for one really great site:

If you want to find anything about anything that has to do with late 70s punk, go to this site. Its the biggest site I've found:
