Subject: 80's Freestyle/Industrial Music

Written By: Tv on 03/16/04 at 00:05 a.m.

The 80's had some good dance music like Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, The Cover Girls, Noel, Alisha, Debbie Deb("When I hear Music" was her hit) Stevie B, The Jets, Information Society, Shannon, TKa("One Way Love" is a cool song.) Anybody like that kind of music?

I kind of remebering "Lost In Emotion" by Lisa Lisa when I was like 7 years old. Lisa Lisa is still da bomb though in my opinion. The Jets were cool as well. "Rocket 2 U" and "Crush On You" are slammin to this day in my opinion. "You Got It All" I also remember when i was little. Nice Song.

Me neither.  I would have considered the music they listed as old school pop/dance/R&B.

Yeah, I've never known where the terms "freestyle" and "industrial" came from, but I'm assuming it was a fabrication of the 90's. In the 90's, labeling past music styles seemed to be quite the trend. I worked in a radio station for a short stint and I remember how the term "alternative" was once used to describe 80's music.

I do like most of the groups/hits mentioned, but I'll always think of them as "Dance" or even "Pop". :)

True. There's a local station in my area that plays "Old School" R&B, pop, etc. from the '80's & early '90's and they call it "Freestyle". Not to mention those compilation CDs from Thump records.

I shouldn't have used the word "Industrial, I should have just called it Freestyle/Dance. In the 90's groups like Nine Inch Nails, Prodigy, and Chemical Brothers combined emements of dance music with rock music and it was called "Industrial".

The best *Industrial* group ever is
Einsturzende Neubauten
Their style and line-up has changed several times in 25 years of existance, but they're still going strong!  E.N. was one of Martin Gore's biggest influences.  Much of the clanging and thumping in classic DEPECHE MODE derives from style pioneered by E.N.  Whereas E.N. brought scrap metal-made instruments into the studio and onto the stage, DM processed their found sounds electroacoustically.  A lot of the sounds on their '80s albums came from scrapyards, kitchen crockery, machinery, and the like.  People Are People was the first "industrial music" hit.  It just snuck up in a synth pop format.
Martin Gore is friends with Einsturzende Neubauten, and E.N. has even toured in Europe with Depeche Mode.
The first E.N. record I ever bought was 1/2 Mensch, which was recorded at Hansa, Berlin, where DM has recorded, and was produced by none other than Daniel Miller.  When I played the song Seele Brennt ("My Soul Burns"), friends of my said, "Wow, that sounds kind of like Depeche Mode!"

I loved the 80's industrial music as well, but never heard of E.N.  I would like to check them out. What songs would you suggest Maxwell? ???

What has become known as "Industrial Music" is quite different form what started out being called "Industrial Music" in the late '70s.  Artists such as Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire (early), E.N., Boyd Rice, Nurse With Wound, Chris & Cosey, Coil, Monte Cazazza...

Learn more at:
http://www.brainwashed.com/tg/industrial.html

Groups like Front 242, Skinny Puppy, and Front Line Assembly came a bit later.
Most of the early Industrial Music has a very radical, minimalist sound and isn't associated with "dance" music.  Cabaret Voltaire, Coil, and Front 242 were some of the artists who brought dance beats into it starting in the early '80s.
There are some purists who don't consider anything you can dance to as "legitimate" Industrial Music, but I don't agree.

Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Prodigy popularized the term "Industrial Music" as an offshoot of thrash metal, which has nothing to do with the genre's origins.

WTF is this? Iron Maiden rules every artist ever! I can' believe anybody listens to pop/dance music. Male or female, if the mindless masses would just stop following the media we would get more great bands like Iron MAiden, AC/DC, Megadeth... SO JUST STOP AND GO LISTEN TO AN ACTUAL GOOD SONG!

that doesnt include sunglasses at night

Megadeth's alright. I did like their song "Trust" back in 1997. I like variety in my music. I like rock music and I like some Pop/Dance/R&B.

So you have soft spot for "Sunglasses at Night" Corey Hart I guess?

It's called variety.  If we all listened to the same stuff, wore the same clothes, drove the same car, had the same haircuts, etc., this world would be a very dull and unimaginative place.  Personally, I could go the rest of my life and not listen to Megadeth or Iron Maiden again and be perfectly happy.

And I'm sure that you wouldn't want to sit and listen to my U2 or Cars CDs all day either.  Don't hammer us for liking something you don't.  It's all a matter of opinion.  Respect ours and we'll respect yours.

Can't go wrong with 'Maiden, Megadeth, and AC/DC, but my preferences lie elsewhere.  There's no race for dominance here.  One genre of music doesn't negate another.  There's room for everybody.

And isn't a wee bit silly to say to the "mindless masses," "stop following the media, and follow me."  Reminds me of that scene from Monty Python's The Life of Brian:
Brian: You don't have to follow ANYBODY, you are all INDIVIDUALS!
Crowd: WE ARE ALL INDIVIDUALS!
Lone dissenter: I'm not.
Crowd: SHHHHHH!

Anyway, I wasn't talking pop, I was distinguishing between pop and Industrial Music.  Ask how many of the "mindless masses" have heard the names Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and AC/DC, versus the names Throbbing Gristle, Einsturzende Neubauten, and Test Dept?
Hmmmmm?
:D
