Subject: Things you would swear were from the 80's, but not

Written By: Mattman on 03/25/04 at 06:41 a.m.

Ok, I could have sworn that I watched Parker Lewis Can't Lose in the 80's. Apparently, its run was 1990-1993. Is it me or did anyone else think it was a product of the 80's?

Good question...I know I used to think that Can't Touch This by MC Hammer and Stay by Shakespear Sister were 80's songs, but alas they were actually early 90's.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, I always thought that "Epic" by Faith No More was 90's, bit it was 1989.

I know there are some others, but I can't think of them right now.  :D

New Wave is generally associated with the 80's although it actually started in the late 70's when The Cars, Elvis Costello, The Talking Heads and Blondie first had their debut singles - another popular early new wave classic was My Sharona by The Knack which came out in 1979.

'70s New Wave set the stage for '80s pop.  I always think of Gary Numan's "Cars" as an '80s song, but it made the top 10 in 1979.
I don't end up blurring the '80s with the '70s or '90s because I was so conscious of each year of the '80s.  Each year meant something different.  The '90s are a different story,  as far as pop culture goes.  I stopped paying attention to popular music at the end of the '80s when trends no longer favored my tastes.  If you played me popular songs of the past 10 years, I wouldn't score very high in identifying the artist, title, and year!  Ten years ago I was listening to stuff like The Orb and Aphex Twin, now I'm focused on contemporary classical and electroacoustic music.

Warrant "Cherry Pie", Extreme, and In Living Color (some of their earlier sketches poked fun of the late '80's Obsession commercial, Milli Vanilli, and "Three Men & A Baby).

Very true.  I always confused the Car's "Lust for Kicks" as an 80s song.  I think it was actually released in 79.  Still an awesome new wave classic though.

A lot of people confuse the early 90s, and even a bit of the mid 90s with the 80s.  Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Saved by the Bell, 90210, Quantum Leap, Steve Urkel from Family Matters, MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, the Humpty Dance, etc, etc....  These things are usually thought of as 80s, but they were really early or even mid 1990s.  Granted a few of these things did start in 1989, so it was kinda 80ish.

Though interstingly, The Simpsons first appeared in 1987, and the series began in 1989, yet the 90s always get to claim them.  Look at Bart Simpson, the skateboard, the hair, the whole party dude "eat my shorts" attitude.  Bart is soooo 80s.  The bad kids like Nelson, Jimbo and his cronies are definately 90s though.

It may have hit the Top 10 in '79, but according to Billboard Magazine, it peaked in the U.S. at #9 in February 1980.   :)
