Subject: When did you first realize that the 80s were Old?

Written By: Ashley on 03/27/04 at 02:49 a.m.

What I mean is, when was it that you first realized that the 1980s had joined the likes of what in your head you thought were nothing but nostalgia decades like the 50s, 60s, and 70s?

Yeah I know the 80s were not cool even in 1990, but you could still talk about the 80s during most of the 90s and not get stares or have kids think you are really old.  It was like talking about the 90s today in 2004, sure it's old, but it's not total anicent history.

For me, I noticed that the 80s had become really old and "retro" in our culture back in 1999.  1999 was the first time I heard people use the terms "retro", "classic", and "oldies" to describe the 80s.  It was unheard of to talk about the 80s like that before 1999.  Sure there were hints of this in 1998 with that nostalgia movie The Wedding Singer, but even in 1997 and 1998, you could still say, "yeah the 80s, it was just 8 or 9 years ago".  You know what I sorta mean?  These days the 80s are like what we thought of the 60s back during the actual 80s.

When I first heard someone say they like "Old Madonna" better than "New Madonna".
I'm thinking she's never completely gone away so what's old or new.  But it's true the 80's recordings are "old" now.

I think you are right.  I think it was around 1999, definately by 2000. During most of the 90's, the 80's were obivously old but I never heard of anyone calling it "retro" or "oldies".  I don't think I ever heard of schools having 80's dress up days and stuff like that during most of the 90's either.  Why would they?  Most kids in the 90's grew up  in the 80's too, so it wasn't like some strange decade to us. It probably did all start in 1999/2000, that's when the 80's went from being "some years ago" to a flat out retro decade.

I would agree with this comment about the 80s being old.  In my term, I prefer to use "oldschool"...for the '90s that is.  80's would be concidered "retro".  "Oldschool" is a more youthful way of defining something...."classic", "retro", "oldy", "nostalgic", or ancient.  Here's how I see it:

pre-1940s=ancient

1940s/1950s=nostalgic

1950s/1960s=oldies

1970s/1980s=retro

1990s/*2000s=oldschool

*2000s will be "oldschool" too in 2010

So that's how I see it.  Tell me if I'm right or wrong... ;D

'95 or '96. MTV started making fun of some videos back then.

Yes, I remember that quite well.  Around 1995, MTV started going off on the 80s music and videos.  I actually have some on VHS I recorded "back in the day".....hey, another term that describes history..hee hee. So in '95, 80s bashing was on MTV, as 80s rememberance was on VH1.

Like "Beavis & Butt-Head" (1993 to 1997) making fun of music videos. Especially '80's hair bands like Bon Jovi & Guns N' Roses. And popular & "bottom of the barrel" videos from the '80's & '90's.

"12 Angry Viewers" (1997/1998.) Host Ananda Lewis & 12 people (age ranged: 15 to 2?) speaking thier opinions of music videos of the (then) present to the '80's.

"MTV 25 Lame" (1999) Made fun of Journey, Hall & Oates, Motley Crue, and some "easy targets" like Debbie Gibson, MC Hammer, Paula Abdul, and Warrant. Though some were from the early '90's.

"MTV 25 Loud" (2001) Made fun of hairbands & some '90's bands/videos.

Plus, new wave, hair bands, etc. were nolonger in style by 1993.

Some bands like INXS, The Cure, Guns N' Roses, and Skid Row managed to have hits in the early '90's.

Sometime in the very late 90's, 1998 or 1999 sounds about right. Whenever it was that a lot of kids born deep in the 80's, (like born past the year 1981 or 1982) started emerging and went from being these snot nosed little kids to being grown teenagers that could speak intelligently like adults and do adult things like drive cars, go to university, bars, clubs, and join the military, etc, etc.  When those kids born deep in the 80's started to become adult like, you knew it was useless pretending like the 80's (even 1989) were recent times.  Kids that age may have been alive in the 80's for a few years and have some vague memories of the late 80's, but honestly they were too young to remember anything of significance.  The same thing will happen to the 90's in the next 4 to 5 years when kids born in the 90's start emerging as teenagers/ young adults and stop being just a bunch of stupid little kids.

Not forget the programming like "Big 80's", which shown '80's videos,  & "Where Are They Now" episodes of '80's singers & bands in the ;ate '90s.

10 years from, nevermind. VH1 has also gone downhill by profiling current pop & hip hop artists.  :P
But MTV would eventually diss N'Sync, Britney, numetal, hip hop, etc. It's common that the current generation would dis the music, pop culture of the past.

Added: '90's nostalgia has already been started.
"E! 101 Reasons why the '90's Ruled" and those '90's compilation CDs.

I remeber back in 1998 when I was re-discovering the 80's musically and everybody's like thats old. Its like who cares if its old. Its just matters if its is good music.

I would have to say right around the year 2000, I started to realize that the 80's was a thing of my past.  Up until then, it always felt like it had only been a few years ago that I was a teenager, having fun with not many responsibilities.  I miss those days.  24 years and two kids later, I r-e-a-l-l-y m-i-s-s those days:)  Sometimes it really is sad when you think about how fast time goes by.  Really, I wish I could go back just for a day.  I would make it the longest day of my life.  I just had soooooooooo much fun in the 80's.

Politically and socially speaking, I never thought 1985 would seem like the simple and innocent old days.  I feel the world has changed not for the better in 19 years.

I'm still discovering just how great '80s pop was.  You know, bands like Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, and The Cure got such a slagging from rock critics who came up in the '60s.  They acted like the '60s period was the apex of pop music and that '80s music was just plastic crap
True not all '80s pop was of the highest caliber, music even I'd dismissed I have since reconsidered after hearing it again.  Examples:
Wang Chung, "Points on the Curve."  I listened to this one again for the first time in I don't know how many years.  The craftsmanship sounded so exquisite, and the synth work was quite creative.  No other record sounds like "Points on the Curve."  While it's still not one of my favorites, it has its own flavor and porsonality.  It's anything but generic pop.
Limahl, "Don't Suppose...," was a record I liked when I was fifteen.  I wrote it off as inane bubblegum, yet when I gave it a careful listen, I had to admit Limahl (and Kajagoogoo) had a quirky, funky way of manipulating bass and synth sounds that is distinguishable from any other.  It ain't profound, but it sure sounds cool.

Critics were way to prejudice against '80s pop.  They refused to see the creatively fertile ground on which the artists were sowing their musical seeds.

Bands like Coldplay, Interpol, and a host of *college* pop bands are now working to capture that '80s sound.  I'm glad there's a new generation of bands who appreciate the '80s legacy.

I guess in 98, 99 I noticed 80s was "old" with all the classic radio stations playing "MY" music. LOL but it really didnt hit me till 2002-2003 when Im at work(I work in a CD store) and a teen asks if we have any classic music, I ask if they had anything specific they were looking for? and they respond by saying. "Journey"  ACK Im old..

it also hits home when I see 'Breakdancing' is popular again in videos, and and Bands like 'Darkness' become popular because of their 80s hair band sound. lol

It was in around '98 or '99, when '80's music was starting to be referred to as "oldies".  I was really shocked the first time I heard it referred to that way, since it never really dawned on me before that how long ago some '80's songs were recorded and popular.  Not that it matters to me, I still love it.

When I was in high school in the 80's I remember various bands from the 60's (with perhaps an original member or two) would go out on these reunion tours. Now 80's bands are going on reunion tours which made me realize the 80's are considered old.

I would say 1995 or 1996.  A lot of the "carryover" styles from the 80s were still OK to wear until then.  By that time, the 80s music was considered hokey.  Looking back today, the 80s seem a LOT cooler than the 90s...  ;D ;D

For me it had to be around '93 and '94.  Probably because I was hearing it from people at school how "old" the 80's were and how crappy the music was...blahblahblah.  It was a depressing time until about 99-2000 when things started to come back, like strawberry shortcake and a lot of other cool 80's things at stores like Hottopic.

Last year, I was putting batteries in a walkie-talkie for my little nephew. I was grumbling about how you had to unscrew a screw out of the battery back before you can take it off, and about how we didn't used to have to do that. My nephew, who had enough of my yapping, said "Well, these days are not like the 80's."

About 18 months ago when I realized that the Muzac in the grocery store sounded alot like the soundtrack to a highschool dance.  Soon as 'your' music is Muzac you're on the road to the home.

About 4 years ago I heard Bon Jovi talk about how to avoid being a "nostalgia band", like staying current and producing new stuff and not playing any of the old music.

I suddenly realzied that if he even NEEDED to talk about the strategies to avoid being thought of as a nostalgia band, then the 80's were, without a doubt....old.  Then I started to think about the nostalgia bands back in the actual 80's, like the Monkees, Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones, etc.

You knew the 80's were old like the 50's, 60's, or 70's when we started getting asked questions like this.  I mean, 'NUFF SAID right here.

I don't think I even asked any of my teachers a question like this back in the 80's about what kind of fabrics they wore in the 1960's.
