Subject: Paula Abdul: 80's or 90's singer?

Written By: Tv on 04/04/04 at 09:09 p.m.

I thought that was interesting topic. In 1989 Paula Abdul had hits with "Cold Hearted" and "Straight Up". In 1991 she had hits with "Promise of A New Day" and "Rush Rush"? So what decade of music does she belong to?

I would say the 80s.  Her most successful album was Forever Your Girl, which was released in 1988.  Her second album, Spellbound, which was released in 1991 or 1992 was a pretty big hit as well, but it didn't do as well commercially as her debut album. In fact, nothing she did ever matched what she did initially.  So the 80s were kindest to her.

Both. Though I would categorize her as more of  "late '80's/early '90's.

I agree I would classify her in the 80's as well, though the late 80's really had a different sort of style to it than the mid and early 80's.

I associate her with "Cold Hearted" from 1989.  I kinda liked that one.  I'd say she's '80s to '90s transitional.

She's an 80's singer.

Her really big hits were in the late 80's.  Her early 90's songs may have been good, but they did not register with the public the way her late 80's stuff did.  I mean, I didn't even know she had any hits in the early 90's.

Her releasing stuff in 1991 or 1992 was too long a gap since her first, and unforunately bad timing, because times were changing and her style was seen as outdated.  Too bad "Forever Your Girl" wasn't released in 1986 or 1987, then her second one in 1988 or 1989.

its kinda tough to put her in the 80s or 90s, cause she was part of that New Jack Swing pop/r&b thing. But if i had to, Id say people like Janet, Bobby Brown, Keith Sweat, New Kids and Paula Abdul lean towards being 80s stars.
