Subject: Milli Vanilli

Written By: eightiesfan on 04/06/04 at 06:34 a.m.

Do you still like Milli Vanilli's music, even though they were faking it? As much as I hate to admit it, songs like "Girl You Know It's True" and "Blame it on the Rain" are still guilty pleasures for me.

Yeah I liked the songs too. Alot of people did.

But even though they didn't sing, they did do alot for the spandex bicycle shorts worn with the blazer fashion craze.  ;)

Yup..I still like um...reminds me of 8th grade.

I went to a concert for them in Phoenix around 8th grade...so weird that they wernt even singing.  It was my 1st concert!

I just remember something else about them too - in the early 90's after they were exposed for lip-synching they did a commercial for Trident in which they poked fun at themselves.

I still think it's kind of amazing the way they managed to fool the public for about two years there.

Rob and Fab rocked.  8)

True, they could not sing, but they had that cool dance move they used to do in tandem.

And they are not the first band to have someone else do the singing.  Just the first to get caught at it.

I liked Milli Vanilli's songs. They were very catchy and I just laughed when they got caught out (the CD got stuck at a live concert!)

Lyricboy is right. A lot of people 'faked' it. The male singer of BoneyM never sung a note (managed by the same person who managed Milli Vanilli) and the lead singer of Black Box faked it as well ('Ride on time').

Milli Vanilli were just unlucky.

They did that side step dance, the facing each other and running on the spot dance and the jump in the air and bounce into each other dance.

All of these dances were very funny to watch.

Their tunes are guilty pleasures of mine as well, but only once in a greeeeeat while. ;)

I could care less if it was them really singing the tunes!

It's the tunes that matter. 8)

I liked them too.  I even went to see them in concert back in the early '90's.

The last thing I heard was he actually released a single. I think he tried cashing in on the resurgence of the Behind the Music show they did on Milli Vinilli.

I doubt it.  Their careers were going nowhere when the Behind the Music show came out.

By the way, their show was the very first Behind the Music episode.   ;D

Reminds me of a sketch from "In Living Color" that spoofed Milli Vanilli with a commercial that advertises how to be like them. Including cartoon tapes.  :D

One of the many shows that poked fun of Milli Vanilli in 1989/1990. I've seen clips of Arsenio Hall, David Letterman, & "Yo! MTV Raps" poking fun of Milli Vanilli.

Then in 1999, "Girl You Know It's True" ranked as one of the 10 worst videos of all time by MTV viewers.

Their dance moves reminds me of the excerises football players do during warm ups.

Posed or genuine Milli Vanilli's brand of pop is just not my thing.  I, however, was neither surprised nor outraged over the news they were lip-syncing.  I did not think they should have forfeited their Grammy.
Nobody agrees with me, but I say what Milli Vanilli was an accomplishment of total packaging--image and style--than of musical talent.
Mickey Mouse won an Oscar, but they didn't take it away from him because they found out he wasn't a real mouse!
Who were they trying to kid when they suggested the Grammy for MV was about music, not the production and marking behind the music?

Let's just say that if "Blame it On the Rain" comes on during the old-school lunch hour on the radio, I don't switch the station. :)

I always thought it was kind of ironic that it was their own manager, Frank Farian, who exposed Rob and Fab after they won the Grammy, considering that the whole ruse was his idea in the first place.

So why did they want to lip sync and fake it all?

The way they described it was like dangling a carrot in front of a horse. The producer made all sorts of promises (money, women, fame) and implied it wouldn't be a big deal. And Rob and Fab believed it.
They felt they could sing, but they didn't have the sound the record company wanted.

Just a quick correction to an earlier post about the commercial Milli Vanilli made in 1991 - it was for Carefree Sugarless Gum, not Trident.

The line went like this:
How long does the flavor of Carefree Sugarless Gum last? Until these guys start singing.

The ad shows Rob and Fab lip-synching to a classical music record and then the record skips.  ;D

I heard the producer also promised them they would get to sing on the next album if they would lip-synch on the first one.

Let's say they never lip synched at all, what would their voices sound like if they had recorded by themselves without the back up? ???

They did record an album with their own voices in 1992 as Rob & Fab and they performed on Arsenio - to the best of my recollection, they didn't sound half-bad.

They were really not good at all. In Behind the Music, they showed them in the studio making a record (which didn't do anything), as way to show them singing.
It was just sort of pathetic and sad.

I remember that.  "No, it's REALLY us singing this time!  Yeah, this is OUR record, the real Milli and Vanilli!"  Pathetic and sad sums it up.
One of our Democratic senators went to a Washington-insider Halloween costume party dressed like Milli Vanilli.  The press asked him whether he was Milli or Vanilli, he said "I must be Vanilli, because Milli's in the White House."  The Bush's springer spaniel was named "Millie."

I wonder who was up against Milli Vanilli for that Best New Artist award at the Grammy that year; I didn't actually watch the ceremony, I was watching Quantum Leap that night (one of my favorite shows at the time)
