I've already answered the question on a half dozen threads in a half dozen ways, however, The Smiths and Depeche Mode were also my two favorite bands for the better part of the '80s.  I didn't actually hear OMD until 1985 when they hit stateside with So In Love.  They subsequently became one of my favorites.
My friend is a music teacher here at UMass.  She recruited me for a presentation on the history of electronics in music.  One of the examples of "electronic pop music" I used was OMD's "Tesla Girls."  One kid, who had sat there looking bored, perked up and exclaimed, "That's awesome!"
