Subject: Merkur brand Cars - what are they? / Ford product?

Weren't these built by Ford? I know they were supposed to be Euro-like or something. And when did production start and end for them?

They were built by Ford to get in on the Euro craze (after owning a Jetta, I see no allure in European cars) in the 80s but everything they put in the car that was supposed to be on the edge was quickly picked up by other makers. Added to the fact that the cars did not sell, they were quick to pass from production.

All I know is that they were built by Ford. I assume the "Merkur" was a Euro-bastardization of "Mercury" and I know they were around in the mid 80s.
