Subject: Any one else have 80's "big hair" memori

Written By: Jill C. on 4/23/1999 at 4:45 p.m.

Recently, some friends and I were reminiscing about our 80's styles and we unanimously decided that the thing that embarrassed us the most was our hair. I can describe my 80's style in two words: BIG HAIR. To be honest, it was more HUGE than big. I used to get up an hour early for school to tease, poof, gel, mousse and hairspray my hair with in an inch of it's life. My hair did NOT move! On a windy day, my bangs wouldn't blow around, the whole structure would merely shift with a strong breeze. Every day people would come up to me and ask if they could touch my bangs, as they couldn't believe how high and poofed I could get them. I used to spray my hair in the morning, in the hall between classes, after gym, on the bus, and before I'd go any where at night. I easily went through a can of hairspray a week (aerosol, of course...Aqua Net!) I still have no idea why this style was considered so cool for so long... At my school, the bigger your hair, the cooler you were. Combine my mall hair with my "natural look" 80's makeup: BRIGHT neon pink lipstick and blush, and blue/green mascara and eyeliner, and you can understan why I've "lost" most of the pictures of me from this period.

Did anyone else have any "Mall hair" memories? Or why it was so cool for so long?

Subject: My nickname in highschool WAS "Big Hair"

Wow, Jill C. it sounds like your 80's 'do was almost as bad as mine was. It's so embarassing to look at pictures but my hair was huge and poofed out and my bangs were curled under in the front and teased up as high as I could get them on the top. I used tons and tons of hairspray to keep everything in place. My nick names in school were "big hair", or "helmet hair". My senior quote in our year book was "Don't forget my hairspray!!" (class of '89) I can't feel too bad because 90% of all the girls I graduated with had some sort of gravity defying hair. Changing in the locker room at school was a hazzard to one's health as 50 girls were all blasting away with their aerosol cans of Aqua Net!

HA!I had to laugh at that one, because I had big hair in the 80's,but it wasn't exactly "mall hair",since I wasn't quite the mall chick back then.Let's see if I can describe this for ya:I would grow my bangs out until they reached to about my chin, then hairspray the top part (closest to my forehead) into a "wave" (see early episodes of 'Married With Children',Kelly Bundy did pretty much the same thing with her bangs),then the remaining length of bangs would hang over one eye.The guys at my school used to take their little finger sized skateboards and "ride my hair".Ahhh...those were the days!
