For me the 80 has two names:
The POlice as a band, and Prince as a singer, composer, producer, performer, arranger, etc..
I also like Dire Straits, Bruce Springsteen, Steely DAn, Roxy Music, Queen, Roliing Stones, Bryan Adams,

Billy Squier, Thompson Twins, Adam Ant, Duran Duran, Stray Cats, Madness, Spandau Ballet,
Naked Eyes, Power Station, Robert Palmer, Michael Jackson, Wham,

Now, what are the odds of TWO people with the SAME rare last name liking the SAME group?! Henry, I'm also an Aguilar! And I'm one of the biggest Duran Duran fans you'd ever meet--in fact, I'm the biggest Duranie in the city of San Antonio (I'm convinced)! Wow...we must correspond with each other sometime...you have ICQ or AOL-Netscape Instant Messenger? Man oh man oh man....

Wow, talk about traffic on a message board. What a loaded question. Myself, I think OMD is the best group, but I also like Hall and Oates, and Guns 'n Roses and Grandmaster Flash and well, you name it. (I am one of only 4 people in the US that will admit to liking Barry Manilow.) However, I also have an "overplayed and now sick of it " list that includes anything by Whitney Houston, Bryan Adams, and the Eagles.

They were mainly known for "The Message"...a cool song, which I highly recommend....I think Dr. Dre or Ice Cube or someone like that used "The Message" as a sample on one of their rap hits.

Partial Lyrics from "The Message":
My brother's doing grass on my mother's TV,
He says, "She's watching too much, it's just not healthy"
"All My Children" in the daytime, "Dallas" at night,
Can't even see the game or the Sugar Ray fight
The bill collectors that ring my phone and
Scare my wife when I'm not home
Got a bum education, double digit inflation,
Can't take the train to the job, there's a strike at the station...

Does that jog your memory?

: was that a rap group by any chance?

DING DING DING DING DING...you're absolutely correct! You've just won a groovy prize! :)

: ....and i can't remember what barry manilow sang....

Hm..."I Write the Songs", "Mandy"...um, that's all I can think of right now. :P

personally, I've always been a big fan of Duran Duran and NIN (technically 80s), Dire Straits, Def Leppard's Pyromania, Aerosmith, too many for me to list...

have you heard their last album? the one with Electric Barbarella? it did poorly in the pop charts, but it definately captures their early eighties influence very well. I liked it a lot, certainly wasn't like their album that came out in 1993 with Come Undone and Ordinary World

NIN is Nine Inch Nails, and humming is the last thing anyone does to their music I think >grin<

to chuckyg:
actually,no...i haven't heard anything from that album yet....i'll find some way to hear them....the album with "come undone" (i think it was called the wedding album??) was different...that's what i meant when i said that their 90's music seemed different...it's not bad but if it wasn't for simon lebon's voice, i wouldn't have known it was duran duran.....hehehe....so that's what NIN is? for some reason, i can't seem to picture them as an 80's group 'cause they sound like a 90's alternative band....there was this song from them that was really nice...i can't seem to remeber the name right not....short term memory....need ginkoba or something...j/k....i do remember that it didn't have much music in the background......any other bands?

I wanted to take a break from humming NIN to respond. Chucky, I was wondering when someone was going to mention Electric Barbarella because the song was the bomb. I haven't heard the rest of the album. Any good? And Grandmaster Flash, Eden, was a rap group (you get the gold star) and probably along with Sugar Hill Gang and Afrika Bambaataa were the biggest rap pioneers of our time. "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash is one of the most influential singles ever released in my opinion when you factor in the popularity that rap has enjoyed in recent years. Give it a listen if you ever get the chance, even if you don't care for rap.

There was another song on the album you might have heard, it was on the Saint soundtrack, and is what prompted me to buy the new album the second it hit the stores... it's called "Out Of My Mind", I also like "So Long Suicide" it's really a merging of sounds for them, their current and past sound. I like it better than the Wedding album since it was a more consistant album.

*snif* I'm getting to discuss Duran Duran here...and '90s DD, to boot...I feel at home here....

Anyways, Chucky said:

Actually, if you ever get a chance to listen to some Wedding Album b-sides, DO...I love them! "Fallen Angel", "Time for Temptation", "Stop Dead"--they're all REALLY COOL!

As for liking "So Long Suicide"--MY BUDDY, MY PAL! I ADORE "So Long Suicide"!!!!!!!! Too bad about M. Hutchence dying, because now they won't perform it live. Same goes for "Michael (You've Got a Lot to Answer For)". Hey--I LOVE "Undergoing Treatment"--it's funny as heck! And "Buried in the Sand" (I just love the light touch of Asian influence)! Oh, and since my favorite member is Nick Rhodes (keyboardist), and since he was the voice behind the title track, I'll have to say "Medazzaland" is one of my personal favorites ;). Also--"Out of My Mind" is the coolest! Have you seen the video? It is SOOOO beautiful! Oh, and also, if you get a chance to check out "Sinner or Saint" and/or "Ball and Chain" (their two b-sides for "Medazzaland"), DO SO..."Sinner or Saint" is a heavy metal-esque song which makes you want to headbang, and "Ball and Chain" reminds me of Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life". Oh--and so many online Duranies don't like "Silva Halo"--but it's my favorite track off the album! I also adore "Be My Icon", which some people seem incredibly repelled to (looking quizzically). In short, I'm completely wild with their new album...but if you want to trek back to the '80s, Capitol/EMI released a compiliation entitled "Night Versions: Essential Duran Duran", with remixes of some of their biggest hits ("The Reflex", "Hungry Like the Wolf", "Rio", etc.), plus some album track remixes ("My Own Way", "New Religion", etc.). And watch out soon for an upcoming "Essentials 2" release, as well as a 1999 release of a new Duran Duran album (cross our fingers)! They may be down to Simon, Nick, and Warren (formerly Missing Persons), but they haven't lost any of their incredible talent and drive! This is one group I'm banking on existing for a long time to come!

the incredibly biased Duranie...

Diane/CityGirl7609 (p.s.: significance of "7609"--comes from the song "Late Bar"--"There's an all-night party in Room 7609")
