Subject: A Funny Feeling...

Written By: Lindsay on 8/21/1998 at 12:57 a.m.

I will share something with you that may sound silly. I own everything that Culture Club and INXS have made, lots of 80's CDs, and of course artist releases from the 80's. I listen to the avidly and know the words by heart.
But, why is it that I get a 'funny feeling' when I hear one of them on the radio? I think it is because that we can hear them whenever we want, and when we do, it is private. But, them being on the radio means lots of people are listening!
I don't know if anyone shares that with me, but it happens. It has gottem alot worse, since Michael Hutchence died. I have to stop and watch the commercial that has 'New Sensation' in the background and not get out of the car till one of their songs go off the radio, no matter if I have the tape in hand.
There is just something about the songs being 'Out There,'

I get the same feeling about my Duran boys!!! Like, whenever I hear a song through the p.a. system (usually it'll be "Ordinary World"), like I did over at Montgomery Ward and our local grocer, H.E.B., I'll get all teary-eyed and choke up. The same thing will happen whenever our local '80s-friendly DJs (all on one station) will play "Notorious", "View to a Kill", "The Reflex", "Union of the Snake", "Save a Prayer", "Hungry Like the Wolf", or "Rio"...even though I own those songs (and so many others...like, pretty much every song DD wrote), I still get all teary-eyed. And even when I'm listening to our local classic rock station and hear "Fame" (D. Bowie...the second-finest guy in the universe...oooh), I'll get into a big boo-hoo because I'll remember my Duran boys' cover of that song. But with me, I've always been desperate for any crumbs any mainstream radio person can throw a Duranie...not being involved in the modern music during the '80s has caught up with me big time. So whenever I listen to a DD song on the radio, it's like someone acknowledging their existence, and THAT to me is the sweetest thing...thus I cry. Also...I've only heard "Planet Earth" one time on the radio (and it was on a college radio station in '92), so if they were to ever start playing that one, I'd go into a BIG boo-hoo. It'd be the best day that ever came into my existence...well, unless my closest friends transformed themselves into '80s-loving Duranies and DD were to tour my neck of the woods.

Just rambling on with her thoughts,

Diane

You know, I think it's just that when we hear this stuff on radio, it's like we are vicariously sharing the times and music we love with the rest of the world (or listening area) and a sense of sharing the nostalgia comes with that, as well as a hope for appreciation. We all as humans like to share the things we love with others, and when every so often a song comes on like that, we know somewhere someone else is feeling the same that we are. Which is what music, at its very core of existence, is all about anyway.

Hey,
I get the same feeling (when I rarely listen to the radio) or how bout like when you are out to dinner or out at night with friends. If you are like me when you find something that makes you happy you want to share it to make other people happy. When a radio station plays it it is reaching masses of people that you alone are not able to reach by yourself. Even better is if someone is near you and asks, "what song is that" and you get to fill them in on all you know about the group, the song, their background and maybe make a new fan.
I don't know that is just my take on that.
Dan

Do you know how right you are? I got the same feeling the other day in Wendy's. I was out with a girlfriend and the last song INXS made, 'Searching' came on. It was a remix unlike the album version and unavailable here!
I thought, 'Wendy's has something of INXS that I don't have?' Made me a bit mad, but to have it being played where lots of people heard it overjoyed me.
Dan, we are related somehow...I just know it! *~*
