Subject: When Did The 80s Really End?

Written By: TheScaredMan on 10/21/1998 at 3:48 p.m.

Hello.I Want To Know When You Guys Think The 80s Truly Ended.
In My Opinion,I Think The 80s Ended In 1991.Yeah,I Know It Sounds Weird,
But I Figure That Music Artists From The 80s Were Still Popular,
Vinyl Was Still Around (In Smaller Quantities Of Course),And
Several 80s Shows Were Still On.By 1991 Though,Pretty Much
All Remnants Of The 80s Were Gone. Now You Have To Write Nick-At-Nite
To Air 80s Programs And You Can Only Find 80s Artists And Albums In Second-Hand Record Stores.
It's Sad Really,But It's Good That People Like Us Are Attempting To Keep The 80s Alive.
Well,That's It.Let Me Know Your Opinions.

Sincerely,TheScaredMan

Hey there,
I guess my realization was when Depeche Mode had made comment about trying to update there sound to be more grunge like. I remember groups like Nirvana and Pearl Jam coming on the scene and all our New Wave hero's taking a back seat. Some tried to cultivate there sound and few succeeded. Depeche Modes (probably worst selling)CD, "songs of faith and devotion" Duran Duran with there new incarnations w/out all members just didn't carry the status they once had.
I guess when music stopped being fun and positive and everyone had a different message. Gosh I remember we raised money for one cause, Live Aid, and now there are about 800 different organizations asking you for a hand out.
I can't pinpoint a year that the 80's died physically, just events and realizations. Then again I can't remember posting on a bbs reminiscing about how great that decade was so in my eyes I guess the decade never died. Some people just moved on and others chose to hang around.
Almost like some unusual time warp...It's just a jump to the left and then a step to the right!

Have a good day,
Dan

For me, the '80's were officially over in '92; that's when things went from happy and sunny and silly to serious and bleak and depressing. It was also the year that The Cosby Show, The Golden Girls, Dynasty, Dallas, Falcon Crest, Growing Pains and Alf went off the year. The music suddenly shifted from zippy pop to hip hop and gangster rap, and suddenly all the fun and silly eighties fashions turned into this baggy, grunge wear. And teen movies, once the mainstay of the summer movie season, dwindled to nothing, and the career of the Brat Packers fizzled to nothing. That's my take on the topic....

Hey There Scared Man,
I'm pretty sure that Rapper's Delight is considered an 80's tune. According to the album, which strangely enough, I still have immediate acccess to, is dated 1979. In my book that makes it an 80's icon.

Being a serious fan of the old school myself, I would have to say that Rappers Delight was a 70s song, although it was a sign of things to come. Only reason is because it sampled "Good Times" by Chic, which went to #1 during the last part of the disco era.
