Subject: The Other Ones

Written By: Tommy B. on 10/26/1998 at 11:24 a.m.

Hiya all,

I am writing to ask if anyone has heard of the 1987 new wave group, The Other Ones? They were truly a wonderful band with some hits: We Are What We Are, Holiday, All The Love. They were on the Virgin Record label here in the states, and their CD was discontinued in '91. However, thanks to some info given to me from a nice person who responded to my posting here about a month ago, I found the CD in Germany (the ONLY place that one can get it). Whoever that person was, thank you! You can order it through GEMM imports, or through TeleCD (aka MusicNet). I would recommend this CD to all for every song is good, and it truly captures the feeling of that time. It's funny, but when I visit all of these '80s new wave sites, this band is NEVER listed. What's the problem? At any rate, now that I have the CD, I am on a quest to locate any of their videos, as well as any info on what members of the band may be up to presently. I know back in the 80s, there used to be a magazine called Star Hits that was devoted to the alternative music of that time, but I do not know if it is in existence anymore. It provided a wealth of info. If anyone knows of anyone who may have information on this band, please let me know. The members of the band were: Alf, Johnny, and Jayne Klimek (the Australians), and Hoffman, Stephen Gottwald and Andreas Schwartz"something". I know that Jayne Klimek has worked with Alphaville and Tangerine Dream. She sort of has a voice like Chrissy Hynde of The Pretenders. I need your help all! Please help me on my quest. I think this band should at least be acknowledged for their contribution. Finally, some postings down, there is an entry for Bronski Beat's "Why". This was in relation to tolerance for those that may be different, well, The Other Ones had their own anthem: We Are What We Are. This song got me though some rough times when I was 22 back in '87. I was just learning to accept who I was, and this song got me through many depressing and sad times. If anyone want to hear a little bit of it, e-mail me, I can send it to you in the WAV format. My other e-mail address is: tommybaumy@aol.com Well, I did not intend to write so much, but remember, I need your help finding their videos and what they may be up to. If you help me and are ever in Pittsburgh, PA, I will take you to Taco Bell (it's inexpensive and I'm a grad student). Best wishes all; thrive and beam.

Sincerely,

An Other One

Tommy,

Actually, the Other Ones were talked about at length on the old message board, so there are indeed a great many people who remember them. I remember them as well, and I loved the song and video for "Holiday". And don't you think that the Danish group Aqua are a big rip-off of the Other Ones???
