Subject: I'm writing a novel set in 1988 . . .

Written By: Jeffrey Davis on 4/29/1999 at 12:27 p.m.

I'm writing a novel set in 1988, being a child of the time. Unfortunately, I need some help. Can anybody give me some ideas as to what some popular music and sayings were during that year? If I get the book published, I'll give anybody who contributes something an honorable mention.

Hi! It's Marie again. You don't need to give me honorable mention. Just let me know when your book comes out. I can't wait to read it! I really appreciate what you are doing. I know so many people who are way too eager to forget the 80's ever happened to them! But it was a wonderful time to live in! So many great things happened in the 80's! Some bad things happened, too. But the 90's aren't perfect either! Thank's for bringing back some great times!

Hey, you can't forget New Kids On The Block (although I'm sure most of us wish we could)! We wore loud floral shorts called jams With tank tops and hawaiian shirts,& Swatch watches.Parachute pants & hacky sacks. The yo-yo was pretty big when the Smothers Brothers came back on TV w/the yo-yo man. Corey Haim & Corey Feldman were popular. So was Super Mario Bros. I can't believe I remember this stuff! OH! Blue eyeshadow & eyeliner w/ bright pink or red blush & lipstick! Man, that was awful! Horror movies were REALLY popular. One phrase I think came from '88: "Read my lips. No new taxes!" Okay, I think that's it for now! Hope everything goes well with your book! I'll definitely read it when it comes out! My friends say I still live in the 80's!Thanks for the memories!

How do these people remember so much about the 80's?!?! I was 16 in 1988 and I don't remember half that stuff. Wasn't Kris/Kross (the 10 year old rappers who wore their clothes backwards) popular then? As far as clothing went, the Limited, Limited Express and the Gap were definite places to shop. More music...Billy Joel was out with his "storm front" album, or was that 1989?, Bryan Adams, lots of make-up, big "mall" hair, Phil Collins, Van Halen with Sammy Hagar were huge in my book, FloJo in the Olympics, AIDS was just beginning to become a reality to the non-gay, non-male sects of our society.

Well, that's all i can think of off the cuff. Good luck on your book!

I graduated from high school in 1998 and remember Heavy Metal being very popular. BonJovi was big back then (the theme for my senior prom was "Never Say Goodbye"). Motley Crue's "Girls,Girls,Girls" tour was going on . I think Whitesnake was the opening act. Guns n' Roses were popular. Big hair was in, too.Permed and highlighted, like Jon Bon Jovi's. That's about all I can remember. Oh yeah, the Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series.

1. INXS was big on MTV, Midnight Oil might have been also (maybe '89 instead), some of the hair bands were big.

2. The one big saying I remember was "not".

3. On another track, it was a presidential election and Olympic year.

Guns N' Roses hit the jackpot with "Appetite for Destruction". Metallica's "And Justice For All" came out. Australia celebrated its Bicentennial Year. The Olympic Games were held in Seoul, South Korea. New wave and New Romanticism had pretty much gone to ground by then and leather and hair metal bands were pretty popular. Alice Cooper made a big comeback. And don't forget the mainstays like Madonna, Prince and George Michael who were all still pretty popular. And RICK ASTLEY!!! Who could forget his stunning upper-body only dance moves?
