Subject: Looking for some music info...

Written By: Will on 5/24/1999 at 5:20 p.m.

Hi.

I have 2 or 3 questions that I was hoping someone could help me with. Here goes...

1. I'm looking for a CD (or tape) by a band called Kassav (I believe they're still around) from the 80s with a song entitled "Mwe Alle" (or something like that). Any suggestions?

2. Looking for a website with info/music/etc... for 80s rap, such as UTFO, Fat Boys, GM Flash, etc. Haven't found a good one yet, only the odd article or two on a site. Anyone?

3. (This one's driving me nuts) There was a song that I remember from the early 80s (83-84) which I believe was called "Jam On It", at least, that's what was repeated over and over throughout the song. I am curious to know the real name of the song (if it's not Jam On It), the band name (the song referred to the band named "Jam On Production Crew"), and any other info about the song/band. The song was sort of like a dance mix, with a rap thrown in about Superman. I heard several different versions of this song, and it's killing me to know who sings it and what it's called. I still hear it on the radio every so often, so I know it hasn't TOTALLY vanished! :)

I am looking for a good "old school" rap site as well. Rhino Records has a decent overview of their old school releases. There, you will find your song "Jam On It" by Newcleus. Rhino released a greatest hits on CD. They were originally on Sunnyview Records (Rhino bought the rights from this defunct label). A couple of members had Boston roots, but formed as a break dance/rap crew in Brooklyn.

The answer to question #3 is the group Newcleus who were on the Tommy Boy label I believe, and were affiliated with Afrika Bambaata. Their were several mixes of the song. The spaced-out tune had a little "Wiki-wiki" refrain sung by what seemed like alien munchkins running thru the entire song! Can't help you on the other two questions.

If you are in the states and don't mind ordering online, try CDNOW. They have some Kassav CDs with real audio previews. Maybe you find the song you want there.
