Subject: Debarge Now

Written By: Laura Ann Garnett on 6/16/2000 at 11:13 a.m.

Is El Debarge married? Does he have any kids? When is he comming to Austin, Tx? Is he going to write a book about growing up in a big family and the pain of losing a brother who wrote the greatest love song of all, There'll never be?

My favorite by them will always be....ALL THIS LOVE. Save for them performing it on the Motown 25 Anniversary Show which I have. Does anyone know if there was a promo/music video made for the song?

I'm sure there was, as music video was already a big business by the Spring of '83 (when the song was a hit), and at that point the group had already scored well w/ their previous single, "I Like It". However, I can say w/ certainty that the video for "All This Love" never aired on MTV, as I have all of MTV's weekly playlists from that period, and I just checked for ya - as you may recall, at that time, MTV was resisting playing videos by black artists, even when they crossed over fairly high onto the pop charts, as was the case w/ DeBarge...

Incidentally, I have this awesome pre-recorded music video compilation (which I won on eBay) that features nothing but black artists from that era (i.e., all early '80s). It includes the original production videos for such hits as Earth, Wind & Fire's "Let's Groove" (1981), "She Blew My Mind (69 Times)" by Rick James (1982), both "A Night to Remember" (1982) and "Dead Giveaway" (1983) by Shalamar, Lakeside's "Your Wish is My Command" (1982), "Pilot Error" by Stephanie Mills (1983), as well as others by Kool & the Gang, Midnight Star, etc., etc. (Sorry, no DeBarge, though!) In other words, almost all killer stuff you never saw on MTV!!! :-)

For now I guess my only chance to see them perform it is the Motown 25th Anniversary Show. That is a bummer! I dont remember a video to "I Like It" either. Was there a video to "Who's Holding Donna Now"?

I have quite a bit of original MTV programming from that timeframe and yes back then they did not air many black artists even though they had a black VJ at the time in JJ Jackson. I remember Musical Youth being played and Eddy Grant of course.

I have quite a bit of those tapes from the early 80s that are similiar to that, most of them have bands on a particular record label and such.

Although I honestly don't recall one, much to my surprise, apparently there was no video made for "Who's Holding Donna Now"! A check of my old issues of "Billboard" magazine from the Summer of '85 (when the song was a hit) reveals there was no indicator of "video clip availability" shown next to the song on any of their charts, nor did the song/video appear on any of MTV's weekly playlists at the time. (Of course, at that point, MTV had softened its views on airing videos by black artists, so I'm sure they would've played it had there been one, being the huge top 10 pop crossover hit that it was.) Ironically, "Who's Holding Donna Now" was one of only about 3-4 songs in the entire top 40 on the pop charts at that time that didn't have a video available - go figure...

Yes, both Eddy Grant and Musical Youth were exceptions on MTV during 1982-83. (Note that both of these artists originated from foreign countries, though.)

I remember videos of course to their other hits. Was there ever a video to YOUR LOVE IS DRIVING ME CRAZY by Sammy Hagar.

Very true, was Earth Wind and Fire on their playlists back in the 1981-82 timeframe? I remember seeing their videos on AT10 which I have a TON of episodes its not funny.

Didnt they play She Works Hard For the Money often by Donna Summer? Donna's cameo in the Musical Youth video Unconditional Love certainly helped Musical Youth.
