wasn't it also on the vinyl edition of the original soundtrack?

ChuckyG, do you have this soundtrack or just a good memory? Well it looks like there is two soundtracks. The only one I can find for sale(with a track list) shows these songs:

1. On The Dark Side 2. Mockingbird 3. Runaround Sue 4. Down On My Knees 5. Hang Up My Rock And Roll Shoes 6. Runaway 7. Boardwalk Angel 8. Betty Lou's Got A New Pair Of Shoes 9. Those Oldies But Goodies (Remind Me Of You) 10. Season In Hell (Fire Suite)

At cddb they show there is another soundtrack with these songs:

1. ON THE DARK SIDE 2. TENDER YEARS 3. RUNAROUND SUE 4. DOWN ON MY KNEES 5. HANG UP MY ROCK AND ROLL SHOES 6. WILD SUMMER NIGHTS 7. BOARDWALK ANGEL 8. BETTY LOU'S GOT A NEW PAIR OF SHOES 9. THOSE OLDIES BUT GOODIES (REMIND ME OF YOU) 10. SEASON IN HELL (FIRE SUITE)

If anyone knows why there are two different soundtracks, I would be intrested to here why?

(This is a good question for 80smusicfreak)

Okay, I thought this was already common knowledge in hard-core '80s music circles, but here's the story: The "Eddie and the Cruisers" soundtrack is available on a label called Scotti Bros., which it has been since day one. When the movie & soundtrack were first released in the Fall of '83, the Scotti Bros. label was manufactured & distributed by CBS (now known as "Sony"). At that time, *all* pressings of both the vinyl LP and cassette included John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band's moderate hit, "Tender Years". The CD version was then released about two or three years later (around 1985-86), and these original pressings of the CD were identical to its vinyl LP & cassette counterparts, so they also included "Tender Years". These original pressings of the vinyl LP, cassette, & CD w/ the song "Tender Years" bear the catalog no. "38929". (The track listing you posted from "cddb" is, in fact, the 1983 original)...

Then in 1989, Scotti Bros.' manufacturing & distribution deal w/ CBS/Sony was up, and they switched to BMG. When the soundtrack was re-issued in 1990 through BMG (complete w/ a new catalog no., of course - this time "5202"), "Tender Years" was dropped from the track listing in all formats! (Exactly why, I'm not sure, but probably due to some dispute over royalties, or the like.) Since vinyl was basically dead by 1990, BMG chose to re-issue the soundtrack on cassette & CD only, meaning all copies of the soundtrack that exist on vinyl LP are the original pressings made through CBS/Sony, and thus include "Tender Years". So it's the cassettes & CDs you have to be careful w/ (if you want "Tender Years", that is). Scotti Bros. has since changed distributors again, and all of these subsequent pressings of the "Eddie and the Cruisers" soundtrack on both cassette & CD do NOT include "Tender Years", either (and sadly, probably never will again!)...

So if it's "Tender Years" you want, you have to find one of the original CBS/Sony pressings of the "Eddie and the Cruisers" soundtrack dating prior to 1990! Understandably, these original pressings now go for big $$$ on both cassette & CD (especially CD), since the studio version of "Tender Years" is unavailable anywhere else (unless you bought the vinyl 45 back in '84). On eBay, I've seen these first pressings go for $20+ on cassette, and almost $100 on CD!!! Vinyl is the cheapest way to go (if you still happen to own a turntable, that is!)...

I thought Scotti Brothers went out of business a few years ago.. maybe someone will buy their catalog and do some justice with it..

Scotti Bros. is still around, although I don't believe they're currently signing any new talent. The most popular artists on their roster are/were Survivor, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Leif Garrett, and Eddie & the Cruisers/John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. The albums by these artists that the label feels they can continue make $$$ on are still in print today. But yeah, I suppose I wouldn't mind seeing Leif's entire catalog made available again... ;-)

well, Weird Al is now on Way Moby/Volcano Entertainment acording to his latest CD.. I could have sworn I heard about Scotti Bros closing shop... as much as I like Weird Al, I can't imagine there was a huge desire by any record label to pry him away from Scotti Brothers >grin< but then again, they maybe just doing the nostalgia only type releases now...

I may have to go back and check, but in the past year, I believe all of "Weird Al" Yankovic's back catalog was switched over to Way Moby/Volcano Entertainment. I think he was the only one, but don't hold me to it. I know that "Running With Scissors" is the first new release of his not to come out on Scotti Bros. Then again, Scotti Bros. did so much jumping around in the last 10 years, I lost track! After switching from CBS/Sony to BMG in 1989, they then hopped back over to WEA around 1995-96 (the distributor they were originally w/ when the label was first formed in 1978, until moving over to CBS in 1981), and since then, things have changed again! (Whew!) Fortunately, most of the label's biggest-sellers are still in print, though...

Incidentally, I saw "Weird Al" live back in '96 on the "Bad Hair Day" tour, and it was an awesome show - he really puts a lot of work into it! Got to meet him after the gig, too - he was a cool guy! Signed both my "BHD" cassette and "Permanent Record" box set... :-)

I saw part of one of his shows on VH-1 and it looked like he has quite a big show, even putting on a fat suit for "Fat" I wish I knew where my video tape of his video collection is.. I've been wanting to watch it for a while now..
