Written By: james martin on 7/25/2000 at 10:41 p.m.

i want to take you back to the 80's where a lot of adult contemporary songs that i loved then and now but some of the radio stations in the u.s. doesn't play them because they don't remember them. here's a list of some of those timeless forgotten classics: "who's gonna love you tonight","goin" down", "into my love", "never gonna look back","always", "shoot for the moon", "take a chance", "set me free","if you should sail","love you like i never loved before","fool in love with you", "hold me 'till the morning comes", "only a lonely heart sees","who will be the fool tonight", "how do i survive", "king of the hill", i'm happy that love has found you". does these songs take you back to a magicial time where a.c.radio in the 80's was cool. does anyone knows if there's a a.c. radio station in the u.s. that still plays these forgotten a.c. songs along with others i didn't mention? if so, please list the radio stations that does. these songs deserve a second chance(that's a paul anka song from 1984). thank you very much.

Pretty cool trip down memory lane, James. Nice to know I'm not the only one who remembers and enjoyed many of the "mellow" a/c crossover hits that were invading the charts around 1980-83. This was of course during the backlash against disco, and when country crossover hits/artists (e.g., Kenny Rogers, Eddie Rabbitt, Alabama, Ronnie Milsap, etc.) were also filling the void on Top 40 airwaves. Forgotten, indeed!

I actually have the original albums on cassette that contained most of the hits you named. (Many I also have on those infamous K-tel compilations of the day, heehee - in the late '70s and early '80s, they made some darn good ones w/ strictly a/c music, so be sure to hunt 'em down!) The only ones I didn't recognize off your list were "Who's Gonna Love You Tonight" and "Never Gonna Look Back" (not even sure of the artists on those!), and when you say "Always", I assume you mean Firefall's 1983 hit, and not the #1 from Atlantic Starr in 1987. Damn, I've been looking for Oak's album w/ their 1980 hit, "King of the Hill", for a full 10 years! (Yes, I'm aware you can get that individual song on CD now, but I've been trying to find the entire album on cassette.)

Lotsa great stuff you named: "Goin' Down" (Greg Guidry), "Shoot for the Moon" (Poco), "Take a Chance" (Olivia Newton-John w/ John Travolta), "Hold Me 'Til the Mornin' Comes" (Paul Anka), "Only a Lonely Heart Sees" (Felix Cavaliere), and "Who'll Be the Fool Tonight" (Larsen-Feiten Band) all have always been big faves of mine, too! May I add to your list??? (Not all of these may be available on CD here in the U.S.) From 1980, how about "Desire" (Andy Gibb), "You're the Only Woman (You & I)" (Ambrosia), "Look What You've Done to Me" (Boz Scaggs), "Hot Rod Hearts" (Robbie Dupree); from 1981, "Sweet Baby" (Stanley Clarke/George Duke), "Really Wanna Know You" (Gary Wright), "Falling in Love Again" (Michael Stanley Band); from 1982, "More Than Just the Two of Us" (Sneaker), "Never Been in Love" (Randy Meisner), "The One You Love" (Glenn Frey), "Be My Lady" (Jefferson Starship); from 1983, "I Won't Hold You Back" (Toto), "Inside Love (So Personal)" (George Benson), and "Words" (F.R. David). Do you have most of these, too???

IMO, there were plenty of other greats in this same genre dating from the mid to late '70s as well. In fact, nearly 10 years ago, I recorded a pair of my own 90-minute tapes w/ nothing but my favorite a/c crossover songs on them. The first one covered the mid to late '70s; the other the early to mid '80s. Quite a few of the songs you named made my '80s tape! Still listen to both of them on occasion...

I'm afraid I don't know of any U.S. radio stations that currently play more than a small handful of the songs we named, though...

: Travolta), "Hold Me 'Til the Mornin'
: Comes" (Paul Anka),

That was a great song I taped that off the
radio back when Dick Clark used to do his weekly
radio show and air "this week in XXXX".
Peter Cetera does vocals on the chorus.

"You're
: the Only Woman (You & I)"
: (Ambrosia), "Look What You've Done to
: Me" (Boz Scaggs),

I have an old Midnight Special on beta with Ambrosia performing that song. I also liked
Biggest Part of Me. I liked that song Scaggs
did as well off Urban Cowboy soundtrack.

"Hot Rod
: Hearts" (Robbie Dupree); from 1981,

I liked Steal Away that he did or how about
Key Largo by Bertie Higgins I have the actual
video on tape!

: "Sweet Baby" (Stanley
: Clarke/George Duke),

I have this video on tape too off AT10 circa 1981!!

"Never Been in
: Love" (Randy Meisner),

Meisner was underated, some people forget
it was his vocal on Take it to the Limit
by the Eagles, NOT Henley or Frey!

I also liked Crazy Love by Poco,
Jack & Jill by Raydio.

"The One
: You Love" (Glenn Frey),

I have the video to this too, Don Johnson
plays in it!!

"Be My
: Lady" (Jefferson Starship); from 1983,

My favorite Starship did was Jane and No
Way Out. How about Marty Balin's Hearts!
Cheesy video though!

: "I Won't Hold You Back" (Toto),

I think Steve Lukather has great vocals,
has ANYONE seen a prono video to this
I have never seen it and would love to see
it. I also liked his vocals on a long-forgotten
Toto song, I'll Be Over You which has background
vocals by Michael McDonald from 1986.

How about Pacman Fever, the Who Shot JR song I have not heard in 20 years, Junk Food Junkie,
Rock Steady by the Whispers, Baretta theme
song or Hold On by Santana (good video!) or Alibis by Sergio Mendes! Who is the vocalist for
the last two songs by the way??

Those are some truely forgotten songs that y'all have listed. Several of which I don't remember at all.

Steel Breeze of "You Don't Want Me Anymore" fame has a song titled "Who's Gonna Love You Tonight." (Not sure if that is the one you were takting about.) When I read that title I thought of Pure Prairie League (Vince Gills old band) "Let Me Love You Tonight." This would be a forgotten song/band.
