Subject: top 40 singles:remixed versions

Written By: james martin on 8/6/2000 at 11:04 p.m.

i was wondering if anyone notice any songs of the 80's that different than the album? examples: "emergency" by kool & and the gang features a horn-driven up version that is a knock out, but is only available as a 45'in. single. another k&tg song is "tonight" that features a strong rock guitar solo (is was called "black rock" in those days. "heaven" by warrant i loved that power ballad song. if you notice something different about song, the intro starts with a synth and a acoustic guitar at the same time and jani singing the first verse of the song, the two instruments continue throughout the song and when jani sings "oh yeah" rather than "yeah" on the album version, something was totally different with that song. at the end of the song, jani(lane, for those who don't know what i'm talking about) says,"yeah!" and the music ends(on the album version). on the single version, he says "yeah" and it ends with the synths fades from the song. if you still don't know what i'm talking about, put a vcr on and watch the video and listen very carefully to the song. that version is not on their "dirty, rotten, filty, stinking, rich album, the best of warrant,or the "power ballads" album. great album by the way, does anybody knows if available a single? "along comes a woman" by chicago if your remember the album version, horns, guitars and drum programming along with a swoop of keys around the song.the version that came out in '85, it was a pump-up synth version that drove me crazy and i have that version and i sometimes play that song and brings back some fond memories. now, does anyone remembers any songs on the radio that is different than the album version? one more to add to that list is "never" by heart. the original version starts with a keys/synth intro and the girls start singing,"wooh, wooh, wooh, wooh. and it doesn't have a guitar solo. just a bass and a keys in the solo part, the re-release version of that song, starts with the keys/synth intro and ann sings, "oooooh oh! yeah, yeah. and the guitar solo was added in that version. does anybody remember that version?

There are MANY songs that radio played in the 80's that are different than the album versions. Just to name a few, Duran Duran's "The Reflex" single version is remixed (and superior,IMO) to the album version. The video versions of Janet Jackson's "When I Think of You" and "Control" are different than the album versions and can be found on the 12-inch singles of those songs.

Top 40 singles are usually remixed for club play but are often remixed for radio. My guess is as to why the record companies do that is marketing...to get you to buy the version you like best or something...hey, their tactics work on me. I have been DJing for 14 years and have a whole room full of 12-inch singles & albums. Nowadays I find myself still searching for 80's 12-inch singles as most of the songs in that era that I'm looking for usually are in "extended version" or remixed yet keeping the sound of the original version intact. It seems like most of the remixes put out now on 12-inch are a 130 bpm time-stretched/compressed version of what you hear on the radio...

BTW, anyone ever notice on the video version of Van Halen's "Jump", after Eddie's guitar & the synth solo and right before the chorus, DLR screams "ah ohhh-oh!" Not on any radio version I've heard...

actually, the RIO album had many variations.. the UK and US albums have several album tracks that were different.. when CDs came along, the US versions, mixed by someone other than Nick Rhodes, were replaced with the UK editions..

they've at least partially atoned for their sins by releasing a CD called "night versions" with some of the 12inch versions of their early hits.. now if only they'd do a b-sides compilation with "Late Bar" or "Khanda", etc. I'd be real happy to retire some of my vinyl originals..

You just jogged my memory on that one. My RIO LP actually has the night version of "Hungry Like The Wolf" while the RIO CD we have at the club does not.

Was there ever a long "vocal" version of "Is There Something I Should Know?" I always have to use the Monster Mix and album version to create a vocal mix.

If it's a cover of the song I'm not as interested. I tried that with the cover of "You Spin Me Round" by the Kinky Boyz and ended up giving it away. There are some dance remix cover artists that are pretty decent though - Abigail, Angelina (not the freestyle artist), etc.

One of the best Duran Duran remixes is the Latin Rascals' mix of "Notorious." Shep Pettibone did a good job on "I Don't Want Your Love" and "All She Wants Is." Even Todd Terry's mix of "Electric Barbarella" remained true to the original version.

The worst Duran Duran remix project was "Violence of Summer." The original version was a decent song but the 12" mixes sounded nothing like the original...really slow, bland house remix...just about put me to sleep except for the samples from "The Wild Boys," Mick Jagger & Michael Jackson...

the Krush Bros. used to be the unofficial remix DJs for Duran Duran in the mid-late 80s, one of the Big Thing era 12inch singles feature one of their mixes... I believe they did an entire album worth of remixes.. Desert Records or something like that comes to mind too..

one of the unofficial CD's I picked up a while ago, Obsession and Compulsion I think it was called, was from the Wedding Album era, and that had like 12 remixes of one of their songs.. way over kill.. for some reason they love to get people to remix their songs.. and then never use them..

it's funny you mention Mick Jager.. he worked with someone on a remix of one of the songs by the Stones, and he stated "It took them 6 months to destroy what took me 3 hours to write" which is the impression I've gotten of a few of the remix people I've heard..

I thought the Perfecto (Paul Oakenfold) Mix of "You Got Me Rockin'" was pretty good for the clubs (of course that's 90's and I'm deviating away from the decade). I'd love to get my hands on a good copy of the 12" version of "The Harlem Shuffle" and Mick's solo song "Let's Work."
