Subject: What is everyones favrite year from the 80s??

Written By: Laura Palmer on 8/16/2000 at 11:09 p.m.

What is everyones' favorite year from the 80s? You can only pick ONE and for any reason you want! What's mine you ask? That would be :1986!!!!

So many cool things happened in 1986! We had a cosmic visitor that year: remember Halley's Comet? Our family went out to the country at about 4:00 am to catch a glimpse of it, and I remember looking at it thru the telescope like it was yesterday!! Let's see...that was the year of "Hands Across America" (remember that???), the Califronia Raisins made their debut as well as Spuds Mackenzie and Max Headroom! At the movies: Sexy young Kyle Maclachlan takes us to the dark side of suburbia in David Lynch's clut classic "Blue Velvet"; It was "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" for everyone and Molly Ringwald was "Pretty in Pink"; "Crocodile Dundee", "Platoon", "Stand By Me", "Lucas", and "Top Gun" were also released that year, as well as the sweet family film "An American Tale" starring Feivel Mousequitz! Onto TV shows: "ALF" has landed from Melmac! Vicki the robot was everyones favorite little "Small Wonder"; 1986 saw the debut of "Pee-Wee's Playhouse" on saturday morning (I was there watching it!!), Balki and Larry became "Perfect Strangers" and other current running programs that were hot that year were "Cheers", "Family Ties", "The Cosby Show", "Dallas", "Dynasty", and anyone remember these short lived shows that debuted in the fall of '86: "Together We Stand", "Fast Times" or "It's a Living"?? MUSIC!!! 1986 saw some of the BEST albums released: Peter Gabriel "So" and his "Sledgehammer"; former lead singer of the Go-Go's Belinda Carlisle starts her very successful solo career with her debut "Belinda" and the top 10 hit "Mad ABout You"; The Bangles taught us to "Walk Like an Egyptian"; Stacey Q was "Better Than Heaven"; Janet Jackson was in "Control"; Genesis sung about the "Land of Confusion", and lest we forget Wang Chung and their immortal classic "Everybody have fun Tonite"?? Madonna was "True Blue" (The first album I ever bought!!) and the B-52's release their best album ever "Bouncing Off The Satellites"(My all-time favorite album!!!); Banarama had a hit with "Venus"; and Robert Palmer was "Addicted to Love"!! So much cool stuff happened in '86 and I know I'm forgetting something!! Long live 1986 as the coolest year of the 80s!!!

1983 for me. I graduated high school that spring at the ripe old age of 17 and spent the entire summer loafing I figured I deserved it because college was starting soon.

Movies that I remember from that year are: Brainstorm, Christine, Trading Places, War Games, Cujo, ET, The Big Chill (I liked it, even though it was aimed at the 60's generation), The Dead Zone, National Lampoon's Vacation and Risky Business. On television, it was a sad time for fans of M*A*S*H because we learned that the show was ending its run.

Some songs from 1983:

Don't Cry - Asia
I've Got A Rock 'n Roll Heart - Eric Clapton
Far From Over - Frank Stallone (yep, *his* brother)
Photograph - Def Leppard
Dead Giveaway - Shalamar
Sexy & 17 - Stray Cats
Take Me To Heart - Quarterflash (what ever happened to them?)
I'll Tumble 4 Ya - Culture Club
Down Under - Men At Work
Hot Girls In Love - Loverboy
Straight From The Heart - Bryan Adams
Promises, Promises - Naked Eyes
Gloria - Laura Branigan
Affair Of The Heart - Rick Springfield
She's A Beauty - The Tubes
Sweet Dreams - Eurythmics
Too Shy - Kajagoogoo
The Girl Is Mine - Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson
Our House - Madness
Dirty Laundry - Don Henley
1999 - Prince
Seperate Ways (Worlds Apart) - Journey (still rocks)
You Can't Hurry Love - Phil Collins
Safety Dance - Men Without Hats
Fascination - Human League
Puttin' On The Ritz - Taco
Der Kommisar - After The Fire
Back On The Chain Gang - Pretenders
She Blinded Me With Science - Thomas Dolby
Electric Avenue - Eddie Grant
Twilight Zone - Golden Earring
I Know There's Something Going On - Frida
Hungry Like The Wolf - Duran Duran
Come On Eileen - Dexys Midnight Runners
Let's Dance - David Bowie
Mr. Roboto - Styx

Ahhh... where do the years go?

Hi Lester! These are some great songs that you mentioned here. Wouldn't they make a terrific compilation?

Indeed they would! I wish I had all the tapes I made off the radio back in the early 80s... I'm sure there would be some stuff that I've forgotten about.
