Subject: MTV Lost the M

Written By: Liz on 8/18/2000 at 1:09 p.m.

Had anyone else noticed that the M in MTV isn't there anymore? They've come up with all these new shows and series and stuff, and they all lack MUSIC.
Now when I tune into MTV I see the same show over and over. It's like they're re-airing stuff that was shown the day before and the day before that and so on.
So now, if you want to watch music videos, always tune into Vh1

Subject: I WANT MY MTV!!!!!!!!!

The reflective part of the post:
Isn't it ironic that after almost twenty years, after the station went from obscurity to ubiquity, we must resume shouting the network's old slogan . . . although with an entirely different meaning behind it.

The rant part of the post:
Listen up you MTV execs: I don't want your "Road Rules", "Real World" your sports programs, your silly comedy-dramas, your animated programs, etc. I want music videos. I want MUSIC! Do you hear me? That's what the "M" is supposed to stand for! You're supposed to be a station that plays MUSIC, not some youth network with really crappy TV shows about spoiled kids living together in a house!

Hey MTV, listen up! Hear what the people are saying:

I WANT MY MTV !!!!!!!!!!!

The "M" is still there. It's just that now stands for "Musicless" instead of "Music." That's what I have been calling it for years, Musicless Television.

The great music critic Jamie Lee Rake came up with
a new name for MTV many years ago, and it's even more appropriate now than it was then: eMpTyV

I kind of dislike both MTV and VH1 because it is almost impossible to find music videos on both those channels. (And VH1 has the gall to call itself "Music First"! To me it's crap first, music second!) My cable service does not have M2 (or MTV2 or whatever they call it these days) and now that Viacom is in the process of buying up CBS, it is feared that the country music video channel CMT[V] is going in the same direction. I used to rely on it for music (although country) but now they are showing programs instead of music videos. Also, my cable system does not have the Americanized version of Canada's MTV called Much Music so I can check it out. Please! Bring back a cable channel with all music videos all the time!

I've got Digital Cable, basically like Satelite tv, but without rain fade and I get local channels..

one of the benefits is I get something like 10 music channels...

M2 - sorta like old MTv, but not nearly as good

MuchMusic - Canadian Teeny Bopper channel.. not much there worth really watching.. though I have caught Trent Reznor once..

MTV-X - heavy metal videos.. all the classic 80s stuff, and the 90s hardcore stuff.. I watch it often, though it's a bit repeative (I've seen the same Korn and RATM videos several times in a week, whereas I've seen Warrant maybe twice in a month)

VH-1 Classic Rock - 60s - 80s, mostly 80s.. sorta repeative as well, I've seen the same Paul Simon video a couple of times in one week.. the 60s and 70s selections are also heavily repeated, not much to choose from, but some of the stuff is cool older footage.. I watch this one a lot..

VH-1 Soul - R&B type stuff, not my bag baby

VH-1 Country - country music, all day, every day

MTV-Spanish - mostly spanish music videos, don't know spanish, but it's mostly like M2

the cool thing is that with the exception of MuchMusic and M2 is No VJs, No commercials, no TV show programs

if only Mtv would show the only program I still like on a regular basis.. Daria.. I just love that dry sarcasm.. why can't I meet a girl like that?

I understand what you're saying crazydon. The one difference however, is that while VH1 may not be playing music videos, most of their programming is still music-related. Behind the Music, the band movies, etc. even Rock Jeopardy have at least something to do with music.

I don't always mind all of that. However, it does give me cause for worry though when I see them playing movies about fictional bands . . . makes me think they are trying to open the door to go the same way as MTV.

MTV's non-music programing is just that. Completely not related to music in any way. What in the world does "Road Rules" or that extreme sports business have to do with music? Playing music over the action does NOT count!

My gripe about VH1 is that whenever I flip on Behind the Music it's either Weird Al, Motley Crue, or Milli Vanilli. At least it was like that for a while, anyway. I also hate those "Diva Weekends" that they do. (It may be music, but who wants to hear Celine Dion and Mariah Carey for two days straight?)

I completely agree about the Diva Weekends. Nobody wants to listen to them sing the same songs over and over again.

VH1 plays a lot more music then MTV though. I mean in the mornings they do that cardio video which is nothing but music videos for almost three hours. And they have the Daily One in the afternoon which is another hour of videos, plus Rock Across America, which is more videos. I see a lot more there then on MTV.

Plus Vh1 shows a lot of the older videos too. They have all kinds of music related shows as 80 pointed out.

I know the Behind the Music can get monatanous (spelled that wrong I bet) at times when they show the same bands over and over, but I find it interesting.

MTV however, continues to add new and mindless shows to their channel. Sure, they have TRL, an hour or so of videos, but with all the crap they put in between, they only have time to show a quarter of the video itself, and the reason people request the video is so they can watch it! Duh!!!

What is this show Undressed on MTV? Since when did it become a porn channel? Anyone ever watch it? There's no plot to it whatsoever. They could be using that 1/2 hour to show us some real videos!!

I agree when 80 said, "I WANT MY MTV!!!"
