Subject: Looking for a name of a song

Written By: P on 9/10/2000 at 11:13 p.m.

It was 1982. The song seemed to be on the radio or TV all the time. I don't remember any words, I can just hear the melody in my head. The video is of a guy (blond hair) sitting at a black piano, with roses on top of the piano. I seem to remember that this was a rock-n-roll band that just happened to do a ballad. If that rings any bells .... post a line.

For some reason, I have Double's "The Captain of her Heart" stuck in my head now. I'm not sure, but I think it came later than 1982.

"Long time ago, long time apart
She couln't wait another day for
The Captain of her heart"

You've described what came to be known as a "power ballad". Since these are considered to have originated in the late '70s, you have to remember that "power ballads" were still relatively new in 1982, and therefore, weren't as common at the time. Although I don't recall the video you describe off-hand, assuming your date is correct, a check of my chart books reveals that the four biggest "power ballads" of 1982 w/ male vocals were "Jack & Diane" by John Cougar Mellencamp (went all the way to #1), Chicago's "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" (also hit #1), "Open Arms" by Journey (hit #2), and Huey Lewis & the News' "Do You Believe in Love" (hit #7). In fact, those were the only four "power ballads" by "rockers" w/ male vocals to crack the entire top 10 that year here in the U.S. (Your description seems to indicate that your "mystery song" was a big top 10 - or at least top 40 - hit.) Not much to choose from (and only the latter three were by "bands"), but that's the best I can do w/ the info you've provided...

As Mindymae suggested, "Steppin' Out" was a big hit here in the U.S. for Joe Jackson, and yes, that was in the Fall of '82. However, he was strictly a solo artist (not a "band"), and has never really been considered a "rock-n-roller", per se. (His one other big hit was 1979's "Is She Really Going Out With Him?")

The image that came to my mind was a song called "Stepping Out" by a Joe somebody. This guy had a balding hairline, but it was light in color. He was playing piano, but there were scenes of him putting a hat on, leaving a hotel. Hope this helps.

Could it be "Stepping Out" by Joe Jackson?
