Subject: MV3

I was suprised to hear even a mention of the pre-MTV video show, MV3. It was a great collection of the days' best "KROQ" type band videos and live performances. I remember it being hosted by KROQ's (or should I say KROQ's former) DJ, Richard Blade, David Maples, and Karen Scott. The first live performance was Oingo Boingo. I managed to record a few of the shows (audio). I was living in Sacramento at the time and as an LA transplant, MV3 was my saviour and lifeline that kept me going in that backwoods cow town. The show was really pretty sophisticated given the lack of any model to go by. There was a studio dance audience that did give it that American Bandstand feel but without the uptight corporate teenager, Dick Clark. The videos were pretty crude by today's standard but really represented some of the best of the early 80's sound. They seemed to like to focus on the L.A. sound by featuring Oingo Boingo, Berlin, Wall of Voodoo, etc. Simple Minds, The Blasters, Devo, Romeo Void, etc. also were regular features. IF ANYBODY FINDS ACCESS TO OLD VIDEO TAPES OF THE SHOW, LET US ALL KNOW! There was also another truly great vintage 80's video show that was definitely local to Los Angeles. Aired on Saturday nights, very late on channel 7, Goodnight LA played THE BEST of the bands that not even KROQ played. Kommunity FK, the Minutemen, the Fibonaccis, and the Surf Punks were featured. It was very dark and reflected the underside of the LA music scene circa 1982-3.
