Subject: The actual decade

Written By: tarzan boy on 9/29/2000 at 12:15 a.m.

I know this may sound redundant, but what is the actual decade for the 80s timeline? 1980-1989? or 1981-1990? The latter would include the Depeche Mode album "Violator" and INXS's album "X" - two of my favorites, which I claim as 80s, but should really be 90s on a technicallity...It's a stupid question, but I have 10 minutes to spare and nothing to do.

I would think it's 1980-1989...BTW, "Personal Jesus" from DM's "Violator" was released as a single in the 2nd half of 1989.

I would always consider the 1980's to be 1980-1989, just as the 1970's were 1970-1979, the 1990's 1990-1999, the aughts 2000-2009, the 1960's 1960-1969, etc., but we are still in the 20th century, which runs from 1901-2000 because there was no year zero and the 21st century/3rd millennium doesn't get under way until January 1, 2001.

I think that you were right the first time in thinking that it was 1980-1989. Not to say that the songs were bad, but its just the technicallity. I always thought that the first few years of any decade were really more like the one that proceded it
