Subject: meaning of 'Careless Whispers'

Does anyone know exactly what this song is talking about? Is he cheating on his girl or something? I've heard so many different explainations.

"...Should've known better than to cheat a friend
The wasted chance that I've been given..."

From what I remember, this is one of the lines from the song. G. Michael does not really give a hint as to who this song is for or what the gender of the person is. That part is ambiguous, but I believe, personally, the meaning is, of course, that he has been unfaithful to a very (at the least) close friend. But I have heard other interpretations of the song - just the title itself lends itself to symbolic interpretations. A "careless whisper" from a good friend; hint: the other person views G. Michael as a "good friend" and nothing more - a "careless whisper" of, let's say, "I love you," could prove disastrous and may put a good friendship in jeopardy.

This is one good song from the 80s. It ranks pretty high on my list. Who said that 80s music was all style and no substance?

Just a little trivia here...Barenaked Ladies did a live cover of this song. Check it out on Napster.
