Subject: HALLOWEEN COSTUME!

Written By: Michelle on 10/29/2000 at 10:04 p.m.

I need some help. I have to dress up for work and want it to be comfortable but as true as possible. I want to dress in 80's style. So far I have ripped jeans, or shorts with tights underneath, stone washed, acid washed (bleached) jeans. Two different colored socks, black sneakers. Lots of chunky jewlry, lots of makeup and maybe a side ponytail with big bangs.
I'm stuck on a shirt though. If anyone can help or offer more or different ideas please HELP!

Fan had a good idea. You could also do lime neon green T shirt or any other neon color. You're right, blue does not work... If you do the neon T shirt thing, one of the pairs of sox has to be the same color as the T shirt. Mandatory (!). To look for a neon T shirt that isn't in your wardrobe, go to Salvation Army and buy one for $1.99-- they have DOZENS of them. I even got one that said "Jimmy Z" on it!!

I dressed up as a Val on Saturday night (just being my former self, haha). Either the acid washed jeans or the shorts with tights would be fine. For an alternate to the big T shirt thing, you could do a T shirt with the neck ripped out (ala Flashdance), but keep the bottom long so you can belt it (wide belt, again check Sally's if you don't have one). Wear a contrasting tank top underneath. I might do this black/white or white/black. Then you don't have to worry about matching socks or bright colors.

Alternately, you can do what my friend and I did on Saturday and wear an oversized rayon/acetate shiny type shirt with some bizarre pattern (in your closet? in your Mom's closet? at Sally's?) and belt it with a wide belt. Then you might want to switch to little pumps though, since this is a dressier look. I found thin socks that fit into pumps at Ames (like Target, WalMart, Caldor, whatever is in your area).

Good luck and have fun! Now do YOU know the answer to my Halloween question above? (How to make my long-ish but layered hair stick up punk rock like??) If you can help, let me know too!

Val

P.S. For big hair, I used a product called Physique Amplifying Spray-- spray at roots, hold it up, blow dry it on low at the root until it dries. It works GREAT!! Oh, and by the way, big hair was definitely NOT optional in the 80s. I didn't know anyone who didn't have it! A huge bow is a nice touch too.

Try an oversized hot pink T-shirt. I wore one the last time I dressed 80s and it went over very well.

Hmm, well I don't have an oversized hot pink t-shirt. (I hate pink) But I have a blue one but it just doesn't look right...
