Subject: Tricky question: "Never say you love me"

Written By: Andreas on 11/7/2000 at 4:59 p.m.

So folks, here is a truly hard question. Ever since mid 80ies (when I was a young boy) I've been searching for a song that I believe is a SAW production. I only heard the song once in an outdoor disco and I hardly heard the words. All I remember is that it was a male singer, sounded like Rick Astley and the words I remember are "Never say you love me". I'm not even sure the words are the correct ones, but I keep repeating them to myself so those must be the words. Does anyone here have a clue of artist/title? I'd very much appreciate help from you! Please email me privately if you have any tips!

I may be way off base, but the first song that comes to mind is "Never Said I Love You" by Canadian band The Payola$ which featured guest vocalist Carol Pope of Rough Trade singing duet with lead singer Paul Hyde. Carol sounds manly to me and Paul's voice is full and rich like Astley's; so, maybe this is the song you're thinking off.

The Payola$ other hits include "Eyes of a Stranger" and "Hammer on a Drum." They had trouble in the American market because of their name so they tried both Paul Hyde and the Payolas and Rock 'N' Hyde. Rough Trade's big hit was "High School Confidential".

Although it failed to cross over to the pop charts, "Eyes of a Stranger" was a big AOR hit here in the U.S. in the Fall of '82. So even though the Payola$ never quite hit the big-time here, most folks down this way do know that one (at least when they hear it). It's considered their biggest American hit (killer tune), although "You're the Only Love" (1985) also charted here...

True in Canada, but here in the States, it was actually "All Touch" (1983). Very underrated band...

Thanks for the info. Now I wonder if we're ever going to find out if this was the song Andreas was asking about?
