Subject: To Whoever Runs '80's Now: College Project Songs

Written By: "Claire Grogan" K.B.O. on 1/9/2001 at 10:09 p.m.

To Whom it may Concern,

I'm a college Senior, and I'm taking a Persuasion and Propoganda class this Winter 3. I'm in a small group that must research propogandistic music. I am going to try to dig up music and songs from the 1970's and the '80's.

Interestingly enough, this sight was able to help me a bit, because it contains many songs from the 1980's that dealt with nuclear warfare, the Cold War, etc.

I'm curious to know if the owner of this sight would consider the Cold War, warfare, and nuclear warfare songs of the '80's propoganda. By propoganda, I mean "deliberate, systematic attempts to shape perceptions, manipulate cognitions, and direct behavior to achieve a responce that furthers the desired intent of the propogandist".

So far, I've come up with:
Melt With You: This is supposedly about a couple making love when a nuke bomb drops. It would be an anti- war song.
Generals and Majors: This is an attempt, in my opinion, to sling mud at the military by proclaiming that old military men want to see WW3. I like the song, but if Daddy was a General or a Major, I'd probably hate it.
Safety Dance: This prob. isn't propoganda, but it is said to be about nuclear warfare.
Wild, Wild West: Is this propoganda?

I know the song It's Going to Happen, and I have read about the Irish hunger strike and about the striker behind it. Yet, the lyrics confuse me. Which side is the singer's character on? Is this song propoganda? It sure sounds like it to me, but I'm not sure who it's for and who it's against.

Thanks for Your Time,

"Claire Grogan" Katie O.

By propoganda, I mean
: "deliberate, systematic attempts to
: shape perceptions, manipulate cognitions,
: and direct behavior to achieve a responce
: that furthers the desired intent of the
: propogandist".

I would say the music of the eighties propagandized independent thinking more than anything else. "Don't Argue" by Cabaret Voltaire even went to far as to sample pieces of a war training film turning it into anti-propaganda propaganda. "Generator 7/8" is about a nuclear disaster destroying a town and nobody batting an eye because "they" said it was safe. Now is telling people to think for themselves "manipulation"? Or is it assumed that implied in the message, "Think for yourself," is the underlying theme of, "And here's what you should think if you're thinking for yourself?" Just curious.

P.S. I'm not for certain, but I think "Safety Dance" was actually meant to be anti-slam dancing.

Another song could be "Belfast Child" by Simple Minds. It is in reference to the strife in N. Ireland/Ireland.
