Subject: Need Artist Name!!

Written By: Angela P. on 1/22/2001 at 10:03 a.m.

OK, I thought I knew and could remember every 80's song that ever hit the top 40 (and quite a few that never even made it that far) but the other day my husband pops in a mix tape that someone else gave him and the song "Automatic" comes on. The lyrics start out like this:

"Look what ya done to me,
I'm totally at your whim,
All of my defenses down...."

And then the chorus goes:

"No way to control it,
It's totally automatic,
Whenever you're around,
How long can I hold it?
It's totally automatic......"

It's one of those synthesizer dance songs and the lead singer's voice (a guy) is run through some sort of filter so it sounds kinda robotic. It almost sounds like it could be DeBarge but it's definitely not. Help! (Or I'll never sleep again) : )

Your post gave me a chuckle cuz the lead singer is a girl. It is actually a song by the Pointer Sisters and guess what the name of it is...YEP "Automatic" i agree she did sound like a man.

Hey its no worse than Taylor Hanson... how many people though he was a chick at first?

He still looks like one. Maybe he should start wearing lipstick and a dress.

(That's a bad visual!)

The Pointer Sisters' singing lead on that track is Ruth. The song hit #5 in the spring of '84 from their "Breakout" album which also had hits like,"Jump(For My Love)", "Neutron Dance"(which was later featured in the hit film, "Beverly Hills Cop)", "I Need You", & a remixed version of "I'm So Excited" which charted higher than the original version. #9 in '84, #30 in '82.
