Subject: AT 40 Flashback: 1983

Written By: james martin on 1/23/2001 at 12:31 a.m.

This past weekend American Top 40 aired the countdown of the songs that charted from that week in 1983. It was a good one. I only caught some of it and brought back some great memories. Here were some of the songs I caught that hit the top 40: "Put It In A Magazine" Sonny Charles (40) it would peaked @ that position for another week & then it would fall off the top 40. I challenge anyone even DJs to remember that song "Memory" by Barry Manilow (39), it would too fall off the top 40 as well as "Two Less Lonely People In The World" by Air Supply (38). It was the beginning of the end of Soft Rock artists like those 2 along with artists in that genre that had hits in the top 40 during the the 70's & early 80's. "Bad Boy" by Ray Parker,Jr (37), remember the bridge of that song which he sang, "Spanked me, Whipped me Let me come back home. Break out the leather, baby" catchy lyrics, Huh? NONE of that p.c. stuff if you what I mean? Strange. did you see a pattern here. Air Supply, Barry & Ray were all on Arista back then but now, only Barry remains on that label But will he leave next? He was the first artist to be signed to that label which Clive Davis owned & ran; last year, he was removed from that label. BTW, Ray would reached #35 with that song. "Twilight Zone" the comeback hit by Golden Earring (36), "You Are" Lionel Richie 2 hit since leaving The Commordores (35), "Hungry Like The Wolf" the first hit by a new group called Duran Duran (34), "Space Age Love Song" by A Flock Of Seagulls (33), "What About Me?" Moving Pictures another lost song from that decade (32). "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?" by Culture Club (31). That's all I heard until I went to work. Can anyone post the other songs that hit the chart that week in '83. I know there were artists like Don Henley, Christopher Cross, Toni Basil, Toto, Hall & Oates, Men At Work, Michael Jackson & Paul Mc Cartney to name a few. If you notice a little trend of names I've mentioned that this was the start of the "New Wave" invasion of that decade & year. I would like to have people post the American Top 40 flashback songs that charted that week in that certain year and start taping songs, countdown jingles, & of course the famous "Long Distance Dedications" to keep it the 80's much alive than ever.

Darn - missed it! I would've loved to have heard that one as well - gotta find out if any radio stations here in the NYC area have picked up this same program. I assume these are the original broadcasts, or is CK re-doing his part w/ new commentary every week???

Challenge accepted. It was off his 1982 album, "The Sun Still Shines". Have had it on cassette since the '80s. Still pull it out every once in a while just to listen to "Put it in a Magazine"...

: "Memory" by Barry
: Manilow (39), it would too fall off the top
: 40

Not one of my personal faves by Manilow, but I've got it. Give me his excellent, uptempo follow-up, "Some Kind of Friend", any day - or even the quite decent "Read 'Em and Weep"...

: as well as "Two Less Lonely People
: In The World" by Air Supply (38). It
: was the beginning of the end of Soft Rock

Great song; have always loved AS (and not ashamed to admit it!). Seen 'em live twice. Met them both after the second concert of theirs I went to about four years ago. Cool guys. Dead on about 1983 being the final "hurrah" for the popular soft rock artists of the late '70s/early '80s (same for the country crossover artists of that era, BTW)...

: "Bad Boy" by Ray Parker,Jr (37),
: remember the bridge of that song which he
: sang, "Spanked me, Whipped me Let me
: come back home. Break out the leather,
: baby" catchy lyrics, Huh? NONE of that

Yeah, interesting song, to say the least (but he was always notorious for those kind of lyrics). Again, not my favorite of his, but I have it. However, I still crank "The Other Woman" loud & often, LOL! Whew, now that tune was a classic! (Forget "Ghostbusters"!)

: did
: you see a pattern here. Air Supply, Barry
: & Ray were all on Arista back then but
: now, only Barry remains on that label But
: will he leave next? He was the first artist
: to be signed to that label which Clive Davis

Don't forget, Manilow did leave Arista briefly in the mid '80s, signing a contract w/ RCA, before returning to Arista. In fact, the one album he did release on RCA in 1985 is now worth big $$$, despite being less than 16 years old! (It's long out-of-print, of course.)

: "Twilight Zone"
: the comeback hit by Golden Earring (36),

Fantastic song - loved it from the first time I heard it! Collect all their stuff (which ain't easy, considering they've been around for 35 years now!)...

: "You Are" Lionel Richie 2 hit
: since leaving The Commordores (35),

LR has always been hit-or-miss w/ me. That one was more of a miss, I'm afraid...

: "Hungry Like The Wolf" the first
: hit by a new group called Duran Duran (34),

Loved it up until about the 100th time I heard it, which was, oh, I think about 1984. Collect all their stuff. Have quite a few rarities by them, in fact...

: "Space Age Love Song" by A Flock
: Of Seagulls (33),

Great song; great group. Would give the edge to "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)", though. Collect all their stuff. Saw the '90s incarnation of the band live about 3-4 years ago. Met lead singer Mike Score that night...

: "What About Me?"
: Moving Pictures another lost song from that
: decade (32).

Another great song. "Days of Innocence" was one of the first albums I ever bought on cassette back in '83. But due to its revival in 1989, I'm not sure I'd classify "What About Me?" as a "lost song" from the '80s...

: "Do You Really Want To
: Hurt Me?" by Culture Club (31). That's
: all I heard until I went to work.

Definitely one of their best. Certainly better than the overrated (and overplayed) "Karma Chameleon". Up there w/ the excellent "Time (Clock of the Heart)"...

: Can anyone
: post the other songs that hit the chart that
: week in '83. I know there were artists like
: Don Henley, Christopher Cross, Toni Basil,
: Toto, Hall & Oates, Men At Work, Michael
: Jackson & Paul Mc Cartney to name a few.

Unfortunately, the countdown for the week you heard (January 22, 1983) was less than four months before I actually started buying "Billboard" magazine in May of that year! I've saved every issue, and had the chosen week fallen anytime after April of '83, I could simply pull out my old issue, and re-type the Top 40 here, straight out of the magazine itself! I'm not saying I'll do that here every week (would take too much time, of course), but I'd be willing to do it if I felt it would generate some additional conversation on this board...

: If you notice a little trend of names I've
: mentioned that this was the start of the
: "New Wave" invasion of that decade
: & year.

"New wave" is the wrong term. (That style of music began in the mid to late '70s.) I believe you actually mean the so-called second "British Invasion". And yes, 1983 was definitely the beginning of that...

: I would like to have people post

: of course the famous "Long Distance
: Dedications" to keep it the 80's much
: alive than ever.

Again, I'd be willing to post the list here once or twice, if it's really worth the time & effort. As for acquiring the other items you named (specific songs, countdown jingles, "LDD"s, etc.), you'll find that there are dozens of original "AT40" shows from the '80s available over on eBay at any given time - there's actually a pretty sizeable collector's market for them! (Although I don't collect the shows myself - back in those days, they were on vinyl, which I hate, and at a starting price of about $20-$25 per weekly show, it's a hobby I honestly couldn't afford anyway! Having all my old issues of "Billboard" is sufficient enough! )

James,
I searched for 1983 Top 40 on Napster and it came up with all those songs. And yes even Sonny Charles.
