I know this is a stupid question, but was this song about the death of Marvin Gaye? I hear his name a few times in it. They also sing about someone named Jackie. Any help would be great, thanks.

"Nightshift" by the Commodores was recorded as a tribute to two great soul/r&b singers, and released as a single in December of '84...

Yes, "Marvin" = Marvin Gaye, who was of course shot to death by his own father a little over 8 months earlier, on April 1, 1984...

"Jackie" = Jackie Wilson, who had also passed away earlier that year, on January 21, 1984; he had been in a coma since 1975. His musical heyday spanned the late '50s-mid '60s, although he was still charting soul/r&b hits fairly regularly up until the time he suffered the stroke in '75 that put him in his more than 8-year coma...
