Subject: Downloading Movies?

Written By: Chris on 2/10/2001 at 3:55 p.m.

I saw a report on T.V. last night about people downloading free movies from the Internet. I would like to,but I'm not sure of some things. It would seem to me you'd have to have a device capable of storing HUGE amounts of data. A DVD has about 4 or 5 GB,which is more than a whole computer! Do you have to have a ZIP drive or recordable-CD drive to download movies?

That's true, you can get full length movies out of newsgroups. It's like alt.binaries.movies or something like that. I never bothered. I only was ever able to get one full movie out of there, and the movie is older than me (literally). You can get movies out of there that are still in the theater, but the deal is, most of the time the full post is not there, or its over a 3 day period, so I don't bother.

Newsgroups are the way to go for that, but I don't know a single person that wants to spend all day checking for their movie. Also, it's very hit and miss. Most of what I've seen in there isn't anything I want.

You will definitely need a high speed connection, cable, DSL, T1, etc. Don't waste your time with anything less. A 56K isn't fast enough. It takes me a few hours to download a full CD.

Once again, you probably won't want to waste your time in the newsgroup. Out of 5 movies I've tried to download, only 1 was successful. The vast majority are not complete posts.

Most movies will fit on one 650 MB CD. In fact, I have put 2 movies on 1 CD.

Who told you most computers don't have 4 or 5 GB? One of my hard disks is 45 GB.

You will need a high speed connection, LOTS and LOTS of free time, and either a big hard disk, or a CD recorder.

I'm not saying you should or should not do this, but this is how people get them. Trust me, it's not worth the wait. Buy the movie!

Anyway, this is off topic.
