Subject: Name of song??

Written By: lola on 2/20/2001 at 4:50 a.m.

It's well known and I don't know the original artist of it; I'm not even sure it's '80s!

The prominent words in it are, "Moneymoneymoneymoney... (falsetto) MON-AY!"

It's a really lame question but I should probably learn who did it right now!

Your "mystery song" is "Mony Mony", originally a huge hit here in the U.S. in the Spring of '68 for Tommy James & The Shondells. It was off their 1968 album, also titled "Mony Mony". Fortunately, the album is still in print today on CD here in the U.S., as a 2-on-1 CD, paired w/ the group's 1966 album, "Hanky Panky"...

In the Fall of '87, Billy Idol went all the way to #1 here in the U.S. w/ a live cover version of "Mony Mony". That version was just a one-off single, which never appeared on any of his albums, though. (He did record a studio version on his 1981 EP, "Don't Stop".)

I do know Billy idol did the remake. I do not know when the song first came out or who sang it. I personally was sick of the video and song back then.

Here's a little trivia for you all: What was the other Tommy James song that hit #1 before "Mony, Mony"?

My first impulse was "Crimson and Clover", but I don't think Joan Jett's version made it to the top. So I'll say "I Think We're Alone Now", covered by Tiffany - but it couldn't have been #1 much ahead of "Mony Mony" b/c I seem to remember both being hits in the late summer of 86 or 87.

Actually, TJ HIMSELF had a #1 hit prior to "Mony Mony". I don't think james martin is referring to '80s cover versions...

I read what he said again, and I can interpret it both ways. But I think maybe you're right, in which case the answer would be "Hanky Panky". I was force fed a lot of TJ when I was younger by my older brothers In fact, I heard a wide variety of music when I was growing up... anyone else remember "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport" by Rolf Harris? lol
