For what charity event was this held to raise money for? Was it for literacy, Aid to Farmers, Homelessness or school art programs. Thanks alot.

There was a question about this on "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" a few weeks ago. The correct answer is Homelessness.

I think it was for USA for Africa! During the whole Band Aid and We are the World trend of the mid 80s. You would think in the 90s or now we would be helping Africa and other countries. Thanks to 10 minute trends most people forgot all about the past. Thank you for thinking of a cause that happend back in the day!

You're right, Ally, the entire "Hands Across America" project was indeed put together by the USA for Africa foundation, although the cause was to fight hunger and homelessness here in the U.S. (not Africa). There was even a "Hands Across America" single released, which became a minor hit here in the U.S. in the Spring of '86, by a group of musicians calling themselves Voices of America (to help promote the upcoming event). The B-side of that single was (not too surprisingly) "We Are the World". The event itself took place on May 25, 1986...
