there is another song titled "Major Tom" by Peter Schilling.. David Bowie's is titled "Space Oddity" i think..

I don't think it's based on a real person, but David Bowie sure seemed ticked off since he claims that song is a take on HIS Major Tom character from "Space Oddity" and "Ashes To Ashes" (Mr Bowie lost that court case). I don't know - you be the judge.
